| Search in: Medical Issues Subject: Lachlan had a seizure Mon Jul 20, 2020 6:00 pm | Update: Lach went nearly 6 months over the winter with no seizures. We were hopeful that somehow we'd got past them, but this Spring they started again only worse. One day he had 3, morning, noon, and night. Weeks later the clusters started. The first 2 times we got him out of it with one dose of the rectal valium. The other day I was gone and he started clustering. I had recently returned from the beach with him and hadn't unpacked the valium so my wife couldn't find it. Thanks to a miracle of timing, I was able to take her call and direct her to it. She gave the first dose around #3 and a second dose when he went into #5. He stopped after a sixth and she and my son rushed him to the ER where he arrived with a temp of 106. Had she not been able to reach me, she and my son would've likely watched him die. We've got him on Phenobarb now and he seems to be recovering slowly. He acts drunk and the Ataxia makes his hind end wobbly. I realize now I took some big risks trying to avoid the Phenobarb. If I had to do it again I would've started the Phenobarb after the very first cluster. We've never been able to pin down any triggers. - Hi There
My name is Tori. I am the co-creator and owner of this forum. I thought I would share with you a little about our history, who we are, and why we are here, because I think that this forum is something special and we have a unique atmosphere here.
We are not the first husky forum. There were many others before us. There were three of us at the start. Myself, Chad and another forum member. We had been happily on a board called The Husky Forum. When that board's administrator left for personal reasons without warning, the board began to die. Not wanting to lose the husky family that we had created, the three of us decided to try and create a forum of our own. However, we wanted to do things differently.
We had found that most boards took a stance on some major issues. People were not allowed to disagree with training methods or ethical dilemmas. If they were, they were cut down, belittled, and chastised. It was a poor display of human decency. The three of us firmly agreed that open discussion was vital and pivotal to an educational space. We believed we could agree to disagree on any issue, and we could openly debate any issue, if we were polite and respectful. Thus, we gave birth to Rule #1 (always on the right side of your screen). This rule is first and foremost for a reason. It was the founding cornerstone of our forum.
In order to keep a clean environment free of clutter on the page and on the boards, we developed Rules #2 & #4.
Rule #3 might seem obvious, but we've found on many boards those titles aren't respected. We worked hard to form this forum and the staff continues to work hard to maintain it. Just like volunteers in shelters, forum staff members often get little respect for the amount of work, time and energy that we put in. We felt that people deserved a friendly reminder at all times how hard this staff works. We also attempt to maintain a very small staff so that the roles ARE a means of respect and not just a glorified title.
So on May 19, 2009, we opened our proverbial doors. We grew slowly, but many of us liked it that way. We developed a family. Jenn Bealer and Eddie Harris were among our very first members. Valerie found her way here soon after and many other friends from other forums found their way too. We did not want to "steal people" so we did not send out invitations, but rather allowed people to find their way here on their own or through other members.
Growing slowly allowed us to build relationships. We became a family and I think many of you will find that we ARE a family. But we're better than all that implies because we have a common goal: the health and happiness of our dogs. Sure we disagree, like all families do, but we do so with respect and maturity. We help people who come here looking for information, and sometimes those who didn't know they needed help. We support each other when times are tough and our friendship transcends our animals in many cases. And like a family, when someone steps out of line or injures a member of our pack, we deal with that infraction fairly and justly. But no grudges are kept. Families don't hold grudges.
We are a fun and friendly group because that's the love and respect we have for each other and our dogs. That is the emotion and ideals that we are founded on. We are rare, and we are proud of that.
So allow me be the first to truly and officially welcome you to It's A Husky Thing. I hope you are proud of the legacy that you are joining and help us to continue to make this a fun and friendly place. I know I am proud to call it mine.
Respectfully Yours, ~Tori Owned by Koda & Hailey IAHT Co-Founder, Owner & Administrator | Topic: meet Miku and Kenai! | Vincent Drake

No need for a dna test, don't need no papers... Look at that smile! Only a Husky can make that goofy face! Everyone might say "Oh the camera caught her while she was blinking." However, I am willing to bet that she posed like that and held that position for 7 minutes while you went to the other room, got your camera, powered it up, focused, and then took 8 pictures of her. She was the #3 Siberian Bitch US and #10 over all Siberians last year. She does not work in harness, past generations behind her did but were not short on coat. She's a very correct bitch, but if you want to get right down to it her biggest fault is that coat. Vs Keegan's sire Jack who is a Sled Dog titled working dog, which means he at minimum has achieved 100 competitive miles in harness, who you can see is a more plush coat. Or pretty much any of Karen Ramstead's working Siberians. No one would ever accuse these Sibes of lacking coat | Topic: My Husky killed a opossum but.... | aljones

| Search in: General Discussions Subject: My Husky killed a opossum but.... Thu Jan 14, 2016 9:11 pm | Since I'm seeing two different questions here, I'll respond as if you did indeed ask two. Opossums: Take a look at this Santa Clara County link. While 'posums aren't the rabies carrier that many people think they are, they do carry several zoonotic parasites. (( Improper terminology, zoonotic means that they are carriers of a disease that can be transmitted to humans; while this is true, they also carry parasites that can transmit diseases to our dogs ... )) You suggest that they're getting into your yard and since opossums are nocturnal scavengers that seems to indicate that they think they can get food in your yard ... Do you feed your dogs outside? Do they take food out with them? If you / they do then you might want to clean up better outside. Last note on 'possum ... while they typically are not aggressive, if they feel trapped they will defend themselves and what they can do to a dog is not pretty! If you let rover chase the 'posum, you may end up with a very surprisingly high vet bill. I'm assuming that your pics 1 and 2 are posums and #3, I'm not too sure about ... As far as her getting along with your ex's pup; from the pictures you have there, I'd be inclined to say that you don't have a problem. Sibes like to play, that's a given; if they play together and the little pup doesn't seem to complain (except to say "get this lummox off me!") then I'd just let them play; if your sibe hurts the pup (I realize it's a full grown small dog but for simplicity's sake I'll refer to it as 'the pup') you'll know about it and your sibe should back off - now's a good time to teach her 'easy' (be gentle) or 'enough' (that's enough, stop) If she doesn't back off then you'll need to keep them separate. Oddly, most dogs will recognize that even a small dog is a dog and treat it, more or less, as an equal. | Topic: My Husky killed a opossum but.... | Machi55

| Search in: General Discussions Subject: My Husky killed a opossum but.... Thu Jan 14, 2016 7:27 pm | Hello.. I'm hoping that someone would give me so advice on what I should/could do (if anything is wrong here) I recused a beautiful Sib from a young couple that didn't want her anymore, she was living in a one bedroom apartment for the first 15 months of her life, and she just turned 2 years old (I've had her sense March of 2015) She now lives where she has a great size backyard, goes for walks 1-2 times a day, dog parks, bike rides etc. she's great! calm, doesn't destroy everything in sight and very chill, she tries to get cats when we are on walks but when I tell her NO! she chills out. In the last 2 months she has jumped up and grabbed two opossums from the 6' fence, the first opossum was playing opossum so it lived but the second wasn't so lucky, she does it so quietly that I can even hear her doing anything from the living room with the door open, she doesn't tear them apart, eat them or anything like that so I'm assuming shes just playing with them. So the day before yesterday I was walking her at night and I didn't see the dead cat ahead of me on the sidewalk and she attacked the dead cat like it were alive, it scared the crap out of me because I didn't know the cat was dead until after I got her off the cat, the cat was stiff as a rock. (last night she got a hold of opossum #3) ( #1& #3 walked away) She gets along with everyone, people, kids, small or large dogs etc... she is not aggressive at all other thank with socks, yes socks! My main concern is that I'm watching my ex girlfriends dog (which it was our dog when we were together) but when she moved out she took the dog with her but now shes looking for a place that accepts dogs, Ive had her for about 3 months now, the little dog doesn't like to play to much with my Husky but my husky want to play with her, I'm afraid that the Husky might hurt her in some way, not by playing but seriously hurt her or even kill her, she has not shown any aggression towards the small dog but I do not want to take that chance. | Search in: The Welcome Mat Subject: New Chicago Owner Fri Dec 04, 2015 2:04 pm | Hello All! After spending my entire life in a "allergic" household my wife and I were finally able to get our first puppy! I grew up with allergic family members that kept me from getting my dream dog (Husky) and now I am a proud Husky owner. After seeing some breeder prices of the breeds we wanted, we pretty much all but gave up on a breed we'd like and we excited to adopt a puppy from a local shelter, when the in-laws called from southern Texas. While visiting family in Mexico just over the border was a guy selling Husky puppies out of a truck, we were able to save this little boy from the Texas heat over Thanksgiving weekend, we drove 24 hours down and 21 hours home. Sputnik slept for 17 hours during the car ride home and got to see his first snow the other morning. We are told that as of today he is ~8weeks old, he was tipping the scale at exactly 4lbs last Sunday, had his first vet visit weighing in at 5.7lbs last Wednesday. When we first met His first outdoor park experience 10 hours into the trip home At his first vet visit, was asked if he was pomski about 15 times EDIT: Please disregard the pig ear/rawhide in image #3. | Search in: Training Subject: 7 month-old Kiko is a terror! Please help. Wed Oct 21, 2015 8:58 pm | Hi, I have not posted here for a long time, because I really wanted to be able to post some good news about our puppy Kiko. He is now over 7 months old, and he is a nightmare! I do have photos all the way up to this point, but I just haven't posted them. Some day I will post them, as he is a beautiful pup -- but right now I am seeking advice and I am pretty much exhausted physically and mentally from this dog, as is my boyfriend. Kiko has a heart murmur, for one ...fine, because that is the least of our problems. We are working with the vet on that, and the good news is the X-rays don't show an enlarged heart, so finally he is going to be scheduled for an ultrasound by a canine cardiologist who comes to town once a month. But the main thing is his behavior. He is literally crazy. I mean he is extremely hyper-active, more than any dog I have ever known. I have trained many puppies ...well, 8 puppies, in my life, and this one is not normal. All of my other puppies learned to sit/stay/lie down/come by the time they were 10 to 12 weeks old, and do those things consistently. Even Tundra, my last Siberian Husky (who was 18 months old when I rescued him and had severe separation anxiety), learned to behave and already knew basic commands and followed them. He was very gentle and sweet. Kiko terrorizes our home. Seriously. My boyfriend is retired and I don't work outside the home, so we are always here, at least one of us and usually both of us. This dog terrorizes us from before sunrise until after sunset, that is the only way to put it. #1 - House Breaking: Kiko goes outside during the day. He asks to go outside. But every night he poos and pees in the house. He poos two or three times during the night. We don't understand this. He is 7 months old. I have never even heard of any dog who goes this many times, especially during the night. And yep, in the house. When he knows to go outside during the day. He gets his dinner at 5pm and we take him outside at around 10pm or 10:30pm for his last poo/pee. But every single night I am awakened by the horrible smell and I have to get up and clean like crazy. Most often twice per night. It is a very strange smell. Kiko's poo has always smelled very much like burnt rubber. It has a very odd smell. #2 - Wakes us up before dawn (related to issue #1 above) Even though he goes outside at 10:00pm or 10:30pm to poo/pee, and THEN he still poos and pees in the house two or three times during the night ...he STILL wakes us up crying to go out at anywhere between 4:00am up to as late as 5:30am (which is like "yay" we get to sleep in!). This is a horrible situation, because if we don't get up and take him out, he will go in the house yet again. So either way, I have to get up and clean clean clean. Or take him outside in the dark (and then we are up for the day). I basically get maybe 4 or 5 hours of constantly interrupted sleep every night for almost seven months now since we have had this dog. My boyfriend too. We are both so exhausted, and I cried today. #3 - He doesn't understand the word "NO". He doesn't understand ANY type of discipline or training efforts. He fights us. He fights back, I mean. I have successfully trained/disciplined other dogs, but Kiko is just impossible. Okay, I know he is a siberian husky, but omg you have no idea what this guy is like. See next point ( #4) below. #4 - He bites us and makes us bleed. We have listened to our vet and tried her suggestions. He constantly jumps on us and scratches us and bites us ...she said to turn our backs and ignore him when he is like that. It doesn't help, he just goes crazy. We are both so beaten up and scratched from him. He does not let up, no matter what we do. He seems to think it is all a game. I have never ever known or seen any dog like this #5 - He eats/chews/destroys everything!!! We can take him out on a 30 minute walk, or let him run and run and run at the dog park, but even after that he is hyper and crazy. He gets what we think is the best of food/nutrition (?) (TOTW High Prairie Puppy Food) along with soooo many toys and good safe healthy treats ...but he still goes absolutely crazy the minute we aren't looking and even if we ARE looking. He eats the carpet, the couch, the bedspread, the floor, the linoleum, the shelves, etc ...and I mean he actually ingests them, not just chewing. He digs and digs on the sofa and eats anything that rips, and does the same on the carpeting. If we stop him he bites us and then keeps going. Our entire house is basically ruined and chewed up in the last seven months. And we are so worried he will get a blockage or a rupture from eating all this inedible stuff that he eats. I know I have probably left much out. Like how we love him, and how he is so cute when he finally is sleeping. I must reiterate that I have raised and trained many other pups. But we are just at our wits end with this one. I know I will hear it from the behaviorists and trainers here on this site, and it's okay, I can take it. Let me have it, any ideas or suggestions or criticism. Anything that will help, please. We can't give him up. Nobody would keep this dog. If we did give him up he would be put down. I want to be able to live with this dog. Please help! Any suggestions or even commiserations welcome. Like ...do any of you have any similar stories? Have any of you had similar troubles but it turned out okay? Sorry I am just so tired. Please help! Thank you. | Topic: Day #3: Nya Bit a Toad | AnnieChan91

| Search in: The Great Outdoors Subject: Day #3: Nya Bit a Toad Mon Aug 10, 2015 1:36 pm | I wasn't sure where this was supposed to go, so if it needs to be moved, please do so! So, last night (it was only Day #3 since I've had her) I was taking Nya out for a walk when she came across a toad (which I didn't see because it was dark) and bit it. She spit it out and started shaking her head vigorously, which I had never seen her do before. I noticed foam coming from her mouth, which scared the bejeebus out of me. I scooped her up and got water for her. She drank the water, and I ran back outside with a flashlight to see what she had bitten and noticed that it was a toad. I called the Emergency Clinic and asked if I needed to bring her in, and they said she should be fine after rinsing her mouth. Trying to rinse a new 8 week old puppy's mouth is something I would never wish on my worst enemy. It was awful. I don't think I've been more scared and unprepared for an experience like that in my life. Needless to say, I was extremely cautious about taking her on her potty breaks following the incident. I kept waiting for her to throw up or having some other reaction, which never happened. And of course, Google was extremely scary and daunting during my panic phase. Has anyone else had an experience like this? Is there anything else I should look out for when I take her out? I live in a semi-wooded area in Missouri, so I was bound to come across something. She's just so extremely curious about everything that I keep worrying that next time I won't be so lucky. | Topic: Hiking with dogs~4 Summits, one day~ Colorado | jbealer

| Search in: General Discussions Subject: A Few Questions: Off-Leash / Un-Caged in Home / 4' Fenced Yard Tue Feb 24, 2015 5:01 am | Great..... #1 - my husky walks off leash with me, however I did extensive training with an e-collar, never trust a husky, they will take off if not trained. My neighbor's husky must be leashed, since he wasn't trained in any capacity. So yes you can walk off leash, but I suggest having a professional help in training with an e-collar so you know how to properly use it. I do not know of anyone on this site that will walk off leash without the use of an e-collar(it is somewhat a controversial issue). #2 - I did not crate train, however I believe that is a must with a young husky, or like myself the rare occasion, I put my girl in our work shop, I doggy proof and leave her treats, and this is after extensive exercising. She is 2 years old. I recommend crate training and use of a crate for young huskies when left alone, for their safety as well as your house. As they age, some do mellow out and can be trusted. I try to emphasize to new people that crates are not a punishment, most huskies need a "den" that is theirs, a quiet place. My neighbors crate their 3 year old husky. This leads to question 3, since you mentioned doggy door. I rarely leave my girl alone, and typically it's a few times a year for 2- 3 hours max. #3 - I do not have a fence at all, if she's out, one of us is out with her. My neighbors do have a 4 or 5 foot fence in their front yard, because he is out their when they are home he has never tried to go over nor tried to dig under. However, they do have an enormous crate/kennel in the back yard for when they go to work, because he is an escape artist, they had to put a roof on top, and cement the bottom, because he would climb over and dig under. A lot of this is personality, my girl is well exercised, my neighbors is not, he will try and run every chance he gets. Miya wants to be with her people, I'm outside to ensure she will not take off after a small animal, through our e-collar training I do have 95% (please see this, I am saying I am not 100%) confidence she will not take off, especially if I had to warn her. There are some folks here who are successful with an e-fence. My best suggestion is to use the search function and read some threads on the off leash issue, e-collar, and e-fence. Ask as many questions that come to mind. My life is drastically different for having a husky, she is my best friend, and to me the greatest breed and dog ever. They are not the easiest, but if they have a fulfilling life they will give you a fulfilling life.....I'd be happy to answer any other questions. | Topic: stealing our food | MiyasMomma

| Search in: Nutrition and Feeding Subject: stealing our food Sun Jan 04, 2015 4:34 am | A lot of the problem is building respect. I encounter 3 different scenarios in any given day. So here's my Scenario #1 - I like having my breakfast at the computer, me sitting on the couch. Miya will automatically lay and stay, no problems, same with my lunch, although at this point thug #2 is involved, my 14 year old Siamese cat, so now there's a problem, because they both think one will get something and the other won't. I get the same respect, lay and stay from both of them and they will get a treat. Scenario #2 - husband comes home for a quick lunch, likes to surf while eating. He has both thugs on either side of him waiting for a morsel to drop from his lips. Why such a difference? Lack of respect for him, he gives in to them and slides them food. I will not tolerate it, he will to a point. He doesn't understand why? It's because he has given in to them and he is not firm. Scenario #3 - same as #2 but I'm there, simple nudge(body block, if you will) for either one and a uh-uh, is often all that is needed, a quick Miya lay down and stay if it's extra yummy (chicken lol). They both know they will get a treat if they mind their manners, if not no treat. So like the others it's not giving in, be consistent, be firm. Things to help you: feed them at the same time you eat, I make 3 dinners every night, and both dog and cat know to wait for their food, they will hover over their bowls until I release them to eat(yes even the cat), they get done before us, and I will say lay down and wait, typically this works, if not it's my husband they bug, still he has no clue why, lol, that is now his issue, I can eat in peace. Also remember that it takes more muscles and time for a dog to go from a laying position than it does with sit, and with sit more than a stand. So keeping a lay and stay takes longer for the thief to come and get your food, hence when you see him start to get up a simple uh-uh lay down and stay should be enough. As he matures, and you are repetitive and never give in, he will have respect for you and your space. You have to be consistent in how you handle things, never give in. They don't like you being in their face when they eat, they need to give you the same respect. Btw, they wouldn't bother my husband if he followed my rules and not give in to them, he doesn't get the notion that he has to be consistent. When he has had enough of them bothering him, he will tell Miya to go lay down and stay, and then she leaves him alone. | | |
