Take your pups to the local humane society for spays/neuters. Way cheaper than vets and who do you think has more experience? A local vet or a humane society? Mine cost 175$ with meds when she weighed 35lbs, my vet asked for 350$.

me personally - I would go to a place I know and trust. the ease of mind knowing she is in good care makes a world of difference for me. it will cost around $350 for my girl to get spayed. & I will pay that willingly. Smile

it cost me 235 for Bourbon but his estimate was alot more there was the blood work and I opted not to do this then there was surgery meds and I did not use $25 of those and then there was 15 extra in pain meds and then there was the e collar that I did not take cause I already had one so I think the estimate was closer to $300 for his. That did not have an overnight but they said they would add it if needed but they thought it was better to be at home in comfort so that was another 15 not on the charge. I have gone to this vet for 10 years now and she has done spays for me before.
I would suggest to go with who has experience who you are comfortable with and remember it is an estimate and I assume that if you would want the pup home rather than overnight then they would probably allow that.

Hmmm thanks for the input guys. I guess I should just stick with her vet. I know she will be in good care there, especially since they all come out running to see her when we walk in Wink. I suppose she's worth the extra money hehe Smile

I paid over 300$ to get Blaze Neutered at my vets and I could have probably had it done it thru a spay Oklahoma but I felt better getting it done with our vet. They did blood workup and micro chip him at the time.. I realize it was probably high for a neuter but we didn't really want to shop around.

Kerian came to us spay thru the shelter we got her from and her scar looks off like it wasn't done the best but it didn't cost me and she is doing great now..

I know someone had some problems when they got their female spayed her they had some issues.

I had Prancer (my Standard Poodle) done at a low cost speuter clinic, and it cost me $35 including a heartworm test. I haven't really decided which way is better.

At the the low cost spay/neuter clinic, they do it every single week on wednesday, and have been doing so since 2010 (ish). So obviously they have a lot of experience and surgeries under their belts. I have seen the recovery room, and while I don't think it is the greatest thing ever, they aren't on the cold floor and they aren't left alone. Somebody is with the dogs the whole time. Cats have their own area as well.

The one thing I would say that I don't like is the sheer amount of people they get on these days. You have to book your speuter at least a month in advanced. They obviously can't take a meticulous amount of time with each patient, but they haven't ever lost one. Still, it scares me if there were to be a complication, do they have the equipment to handle one? I'm not too sure on that one.

I haven't decided which way I want to do it yet. It's not like I can't afford the whole package, but I won't lie, it is nice to save money..but I don't want to skimp on my girl.

You should check to see if any of the vets you know are part of the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Program. Only certain vets are apart of this program. Our vet quoted us $480 w/o ASPCA help. ASPCA= $88 certificate + Vet cost of $215. With the ASPCA the vet will "Donate" there time so it will be cheaper.

would you guys just pay the $450 for everything and have it done where you are comfortable or is that price really crazy and should I look somewhere else?
Personally I went somewhere else. My vet gave me an estimate of $350 for Karli's spay and it included everything as well. So I did some shopping around and happened to mention to our shelter that I was looking to get my dog spayed and not only did she give me a coupon for $45 off but she recommended the vet that they use for the shelter dogs. So instead of $350 I paid $200. And that was including microchipping. And Karli is healing up just fine.

wow.....when we talk about prices at my dog park with other owners my vet always is the most expensive. but the vet quoted my $182 for Kiba's spay next weekend. Now i dont think that's on the pricey side at all! Plus they are keeping her overnight which i actually prefer for recovery right after surgery.

Laura, I would go where you feel more comfortable and where you think is best for you and your dog. My chi girls cost $500 each to have spayed, so $1,000 to get them both done.

Thank you thank you everyone!! I think I am going to have it done at her vet no matter the price, call me crazy but I don't care Razz ...I guess I would rather not worry (even though I still will) knowing we're comfortable there and the fact its 24 hours and someone will always be there overnight Smile

To me, its not about how many times they have done it. Spay/Neuter is common procedure. The biggest thing for me, is making sure they get the care they need after surgery.

So I've decided to bump this topic up, as we're having Luna spayed this week.  We did forget to ask how much this was going to cost us when we scheduled the appointment, so I just called and requested an estimate... yeah.. in one of the most expensive counties in US (Loudon in VA) you'll get a bill of almost $650, and that covers the procedure, pre-procedure lab tests (kidney & liver functions, clotting time), anesthesia, pain control, collar & a fecal sample (re-testing after giardia treatment).  I think I'm breaking a record here. Even if I subtract what the fecal testing usually costs, I'm still left with almost a $600 bill. No overnight stay (they said we'd probably be able to pick her up around 3-4pm), no additional vaccines, no microchip (she's already microchipped).  I don't want to sound like I'm cheap, but doesn't that sound "a little" on the high side? I mean we've been expecting it to be in the $200-300 range, but $650? wow.. I'm thinking of calling Banfield to check their rates, as well as another vet we use - for our older dog.

Other Virginians out there - did you pay that much for your female dog to be spayed?

My girls cost $500 per spay and it only included the procedure (traditional spay, not laser), anesthesia, and take home pain meds. No lab work, tests, or microchip. Mine would have probably cost what you're facing if I'd had extra done.

My male has a retained testicle and the estimate from our vet to neuter him was almost $1200. They have to do abdominal surgery to find the other testicle, along with the traditional neuter. This estimate did not include any pre-surgical testing. Well, at the suggestion of another forum member Megan, I started looking into neuter clinics. I found one in the city that does the whole thing including blood tests for $195. So he's going in this Friday to get it done. I actually feel very confident with the clinic because it's all they do every day, all day. I would suggest searching for neuter clinics, or try contacting your local aspca, they will often have references of low cost spay/neuter programs. I would expect a spay to cost somewhere between $300-$400 from a normal vet.

If it makes anyone feel better, we paid $829 for Shadow's spay. BUT she had to get it done from a specialist because she needed specialized monitoring and a different anesthesia protocol. For a normal spay though, $650 seems a bit steep.

If I got an estimate that high I would have an unfixed dog. That might make me sound cheap, which isn't a complete lie, but I was perfectly happy with the $75 shelter spay we had on our last dog. I haven't priced getting Kenzi spayed yet, but everyone I've talked to said $200 at my current vet.

I paid $150 for maggie to get spayed. That was the low cost spay center thing. It was done at my old vets office in california but they did low cost spays during the weekends. That included everything needed or wanted

I paid about $260, for Karma. That included her antibiotics, and pain meds if she needed it.

Humane Society for sure, lowest prices around. All depends on weight of the animal and the city you get it done in. I would not pay more than $350 for a spay/neuter. It cost me $150 for procedure and antibiotics at my local humane society.

I just paid a total of $455 for Keeara's spay at our vet. That included blood work, pain meds, over night stay...basically everything! Both my girls healed wonderfully so I consider it worth the price. As for $650 though, I'm not sure I would pay that!

Need to becareful of some low cost shops. They usually cut corners. Like not doing blood panel, and stuff like that. I was actually going to take koda to one right by where i work, but i heard a story and i cancelled a week before and just went to my vet who i trust.. Only reason i considered somewhere other than vet was price, but they cut me a deal a little. Some vets are willing to work with you on price sometimes. Also unless its a complicated neuter or spay, i think overnight stay is pointless.
