Decreased Appetite :( Empty
PostSubject: Decreased Appetite :(   Decreased Appetite :( EmptyMon Apr 23, 2012 12:02 pm

Hello there! I have a question and I thought you guys are be the right ones to ask before I go to the vet. I have a 5 and a half month old female Siberian husky. She is on the Taste of the Wild Smoked Salmon puppy formula, and she loved it! She would dance for her food. After we brought her home from boarding (she stayed only for a night, and has been there before twice, so I don't think she is depresed), I tried to feed her breakfast like I always did. But she showed absolutely no interest in her food! She ate nothing! I was shocked, she never was a picky eater and would eat ANYthing!!! I don't know what to do. She will eat canned food, but no dry food and from today, no raw food either Sad I'm so worried. Should I take her to the vet, or do you think she's just tired of her old food???

Thanks
..

It's possible she's just out of joint from the boarding. Also, where are you? If it's getting warmer, she just may not be hungry. My girl did that several times (and still does) but she eats when she's hungry.

Is she drinking water? Going to the bathroom okay (everything's normal)? Is she acting normal or is she lethargic? If she's drinking, pottying and acting normal, I wouldn't worry too much yet. A call to the vet probably wouldn't hurt if you're that worried, though.

DON'T switch her food unless she's having a bad reaction to it. That's how picky eaters are created. Give her breakfast as usual, but pick up the dish after about 10 or 15 minutes and then don't feed her again until her next normal feeding time. She'll eat if she's hungry provided there aren't any other underlying issues.

FWIW, my girl self-regulates and will go for a meal or two (sometimes a day or more) without eating or eating very little. The first time this happened it freaked me out...I thought she was sick and I worried about her. Then she ate her food with as much gusto as before when she was ready. I did a little research and found that most huskies are generally good at self-regulating their food intake. If they're not hungry, they won't eat.

Good luck, and if you're really worried a call to the vet is free. Very Happy

We had the same issues with our girl at right around that age too. As far as we could tell, we think it was a combination of the teething and her growth rate slowing a bit. We reduced her portion size a little bit and if she was turning up her nose at the food we'd run just a little bit of warm water on it to make it a little more appetizing. We wouldn't give in and switch her food either, because I didn't want another picky eater on my hands. My husband is bad enough Razz

Kim brought up another good point as well. If you're in a warmer climate, she could just be slowing down because it's getting hot and she's not as active. We're in the FL panhandle and have noticed a bit of a slowdown with Ghost over the last few weeks. She's turned her nose up at a meal a few times as well.

As long as your girl is still acting normal and has plenty of energy, I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck!

Thank you guys so much. Lots of good advice! We live in South Carolina, and it is getting pretty hot out here. She's been eating more today, which was a huge relief. I was worried she might be going in heat Sad
Thanks again. I really appreciate your help Smile
