| Yesterday evening, Caper, my visiting brother and I went on a lovely hike around the lake by our home. Everything was wonderful until towards the end of the trail - There were some picnic tables in that area and it was getting dark. Suddenly Caper races away from us and pounces on something and caught it! I pointed the flashlight in that direction and frantically tried to reel him back but it was too late - he got skunked right in the face!! He spent the next few minutes salivating, pawing his face, trying to rub it off in the grass then sees another skunk in the bushes to our right and tries to take off after it too!!! Got home and hosed him down in the cold dark... successfully got most of the smell off with H2O2, baking soda and soap, but am baffled that he did not learn from being sprayed that skunks are bad news!! Why?? And how can I teach him to avoid these disgusting creatures?? (sorry, any offended skunk lovers) I will definitely put him on a short lead whenever we near garbage dense areas in the evenings from now on. |

| I have no idea how to get him off them, but after our two got skunked, our vet gave us her best remedy idea for the (hopefully never) next time. She's had great success with it. Take any kind of toothpaste and rub it into the effected area, really massage it in well, leave it for about 10 minutes, then bath time.
Good luck. He's gonna stink for a while, especially when he gets wet. Tika got sprayed in late May and I swear you can still smell it when she goes swimming. |

| I'll keep the toothpaste in mind in case it ever happens again. Would have been nicer for his fur than the hydrogen peroxide. My hands were dry and flaking all over after handling that stuff.
The skunk smell is still faint on him and his collar and you're right - it really gets into the air when I towel him off after the park. Someone had bought me some bed head pet perfume/deodorizer but I'm not sure how safe it is, and whether the perfume would hurt his sensitive nose. All I know is that it'll stop mine from hurting, lol. |
