Question about gas Empty
PostSubject: Question about gas   Question about gas EmptySun Apr 17, 2016 12:05 am

Logan has become quite gassy. As an 8 week old he had no gas that we detected, and at 12 1/2 weeks he's progressed to impressive bombs several times a night. We've stopped different kinds of treats one at a time, carrots, new training treats, apples, to try and find the culprit to no avail. The only change is that for a couple weeks at least, he had constant diarrhea- it sounded like he was peeing, not pooping. (We use the puppy chow the breeder uses.) over time they formed up, but we noticed as his poop got firmer the gas got worse too. Any suggestions? His favorite spot to sleep is under our legs against the couch so you can imagine it's become....a hazardous situation.

Allerlei, are you feeding the actual Purina puppy chow? If not what kibble are you feeding. I can say if it is purina, that is probably the cause of the gas. Many huskies just do not do well on grain inclusive foods. Let us know what you are feeding to help. Also has Logan seen a vet for possible giardia or coccidia? Those two tummy issues can produce gas along with diarrhea and liquid diarrhea.

My first thought went to giardia or something of the sort. That is just rank, the gas, the poop, all of it is a knock you down kind of stink when giardia or Coccidia are involved, but knowing food would help. My mind is running along the same path as Renee.

Allerlei, I would get a vet check if Logan continues with diarrhea, even if it's intermittent. Secondly, like we all have said grain and huskies don't mesh well at all. I would go to a grain free dog food, and between the vet and different food you should notice a change.

Okay. The diarrhea seemed to work itself out. He hasn't had it for about 2weeks.

Our Loki is quite gassy as well, but i believe its due to how fast he eats. We even bought him a slow feed bowl to slow him down, but he never chews the food, he inhales it. Watch how he eats, i am willing to be like Loki, he just inhales the food (and air) and that is what is causing the gas.

He certainly rarely chews food. We use a puzzle ball to feed him but when he gets pieces out he inhales them, pretty much

We'll try feeding him from a raised bowl again.

Question about gas Empty
PostSubject: Re: Question about gas   Question about gas EmptyTue Apr 19, 2016 3:35 am

I do not recommend raised bowls, some research has been said that raised bowls can promote bloat. I would really change Logan's diet to a grain free, as a side note, grain inclusive kibble may lead to bloat as well. It is not typical to puppies, but this is something to be aware of as he grows. My girl was a scarfer of food as well, and at 6 months I switched to an all life stage food, and the kibble was bigger and it slowed her down. I also tried a slow feeder type bowl with 0 success. I am sorry to say, Eukanuba is not a real quality food, corn meal is the second ingredient and they also use brewers rice, which can also cause gas. For the price you are paying for Eukanuba, you could feed a grain free. My husky had off and on diarrhea when I fed a lower quality corn based kibble, switched to grain free and no more issues. Although diarrhea is a different issue than just gas, feeding grain inclusive kibble will promote gas, upset stomach, etc.

Wow, raised bowls were supposed to be the big thing when they were introduced.

Whenever Suka gets really bad gas, it's because of something he's eaten. If the gas is regular, I would recommend switching his kibble.

I don't really know what to tell you, but you are not alone. My Artemis rarely makes a peep. She isn't very vocal, at least right now, and she isn't very gassy. Every time we get in the car to go anywhere, even if it is a place that she likes, she farts. She stinks up the whole car. She smells like she has eaten something dead and then rolled in something dead. I feel your pain.
