Going in to heat Empty
PostSubject: Going in to heat   Going in to heat EmptyWed Dec 19, 2012 12:42 am

So my little sib is growing up and is going into her first heat, and I must admit I am FREAKING OUT! She got out of our yard today, which is a feat in itself. She pulled chickenwire out of a wooden post that was nailed in, pulled it up, and dug the dirt out from under it to get out and chase the deer. Thankfully she's only at the point where she's bleeding, and that doesn't concern me at all, I just feel so bad for her. She looks so uncomfortable and restless, and I don't want to let her freely out in the yard without being leashed incase another dog gets in the yard.

I guess my main question is if their's any way I can soothe her and make her feel a little more comfortable? It's crushing me seeing her going through this, she's like my child. Any help I can get with this or hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!!!

I think it's best to keep her inside as much as possible. Even if you leash her up, other dogs can still get into your yard. But as far as soothing her, I've never had a female dog lol, so I'm not help there.

Just curious, why don't you just get her spayed?

Freya is experiencing her first heat as well as we speak. She doesnt seem to be in too much disscomfort, her energy levels have decreased but thats not a bad thing lol. I was freaking out as well. I've never had a female go into heat on me before, I've always had them spayed before they had a chance. I was a little late in this case.

I got Freya sanitary pants for when she's inside. It helps with the mess of it all. I'm absoluitelly in love with them.
She's coming to the end of the bleeding now so this is the time I have to be extra careful with her as she's coming up to her fertile time.
I'm really hoping it will be over before christmas because we're going away and she's going to a friends house, but I'm not holding my breath.

Also, I'd watch out with chicken wire as well. My childhood dog got pregnant through chicken wire. She backed up to it and has a male servce her - The little Hussy Razz .

I would definitely recommend getting your dog some undies so she can come inside. Just like with a woman, your dogs hormones are out of whack and she's an emotional, needy mess during it. When my dogs are in heat, they wear their undies, but I give them extra love and attention for their periods. Lots of positive treat training with stuff they know well already. Just treat them same as you would wife/girlfriend if she's having her "time".

Keep her inside so male dogs cannot jump the fence, and she can't escape. She's acting restless because she wants to find a mate, not uncomfortable due to pain. I'd get her spayed after she is completely finished with her heat cycle, but that's just my opinion.

She'll be fine Smile

Nicky just got over her's and we didn't use the panties. She kept herself pretty clean and we didn't really have to do anything, but try to keep her away from our other male dog's (even though they are neutered).
