Huskies blow their undercoats heavily for about 2 months (sometimes longer depending on how well and consistently you brush them). This "blow" happens twice a year. To help it, I recommend brushing her as often as possible. When Koda is blowing, John brushes him once a day to help move the shedding along with a shedding blade, an undercoat rake and a furminator. It's probably a little overkill, but all these brushes do slightly different jobs. We also find that bathing him once helps bring out some of the fur.

Other than that, huskies shed lightly and pretty steadily year round, but just as much as a normal dog would. If you're concerned about her diet, I wouldn't recommend changing anything unless her stool seems soft, although a slightly higher quality food may help SOME of the shedding, but is likely not the full cause. If you look at www.dogfoodanalysis.com I think you'll find that Beneful has a slightly lower rating than the foods that most of us feed our dogs. Koda is on Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream formula, as I find that most fish formulas work the best for him (fish is one of the most natural sources of food for the husky). Others on this board feed Innova Evo, Orijen, Wellness Core and other grain free foods. Grain is not a natural part of a canine's diet and with the sensitive, efficient digestive system of the husky, grain often does not sit well with them. We were feeding Koda Eagle Pack Holistic Salmon and Sardine, which is mixed with oatmeal, and his stool was never firm.

It's a trial and error process finding a food that your dog likes, that is healthy, and that works for him. Remember that it takes about 2-3 weeks for the food to really start having an effect on his system, so immediate results are not always accurate. I wish you luck! And let us know if you have any questions!

I think Tori answered your question well and you can check out some of our other post on food and grooming. i also noticed you are in NC and i know others from the warmer states say that their huskies shedding is much more of a year round thing and that the full on coat blows happen sometimes 4 times a year. what have you been doing as far as brushing her?

She could be blowing coat and as others have already stated it can last around two months for some...it does for me at least. lol Just keep up with the brushing and hopefully she is about done. Smile

I would definatly try switching foods and see if that helps. Usually shedding is b/c of the time of year or b/c something is lacking in their diet. I do use a dog supplement called, Grizzly Salmon Oil. It works really well at keeping my dogs coat shiny and healthy. And relieves some of the shedding.Grizzly Salmon Oil

Constantly switching the diet isn't recommended. A diet switch is a long, drawn out process. I'd use the diet as a last resort.

A question for the OP: how often are you bathing your dog? You mention that you're bathing it whenever it gets in mud and junk. I usually bathe Sitka once when he's blowing his coat, which is about twice a year. Over washing your dog could be drying out his skin and actually be causing MORE shedding.
