| So, I've bought a clicker and some really irresistable (and stinky) salmon treats for Drake to use during training. Ceara has already been very helpful to start the training, and I've "charged" the clicker tonight, although I may need to do it again tomorrow just make sure he understands...
The main thing I'm wanting to accomplish with the clicker training is to make him more confident and less fearful. Most of the clicker training I have read about online is for tricks and normal "manners", like sitting, looking, recall, etc. I'm wanting to use this to reinforce behavior like him approaching us, eventually letting us touch him, not being fearful of us, etc.
There's not a lot of advice on clicker training when it comes to reinforcing behaviors like that. I feel confused at what I should reward and how many treats to give him. Because he IS food oriented, once I click and give him a treat he will stay there until the treats run out or I stop feeding him.
So for example, if he walks up to me for no reason, and I click and treat, how many clicks and treats should I give him for continuing to stand there? Usually if I ignore him after a few treats, he'll sit down and wait, and sometimes he'll lay at my feet and wait. Should I reward him for not only approaching me, but sitting and laying down as well? I'm so confused and help is appreciated!!
Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to clicker train so that he's no longer scared of us approaching/touching him that would be great! |

| Well... You can try this Click to come to you give the treat. Then turn your back to him click again wait for him to come to you and give the treat. Maybe after a few times walk to a different area click and see if he comes to you and give the treat. When we did click training they had start out out just clicking and give the treat till it look like they were associating the two. Now if he is coming to you when you click then I would say he is. After a few minutes of that try a sit command. Have him sit if he does click the clicker and give the treat. Also it's one click one treat. Keep in mind sometimes dogs will lose interest after about 15 or 20 mins so you usually have to change it up.
Hope that helps :/ |

| Only click when he's doing the behavior you want. Every now and then give him a "jackpot" many treats one after another. Not sure exactly what you should be doing, but you could try standing up, if he comes to you click and treat then turn around and wait for him to walk around you to find your face again and click and treat if he does. It's teaching "watch me." Glad he's not afraid of the clicker! I was afraid he would be. _________________ -Sara |
