Dog Park Altercation Empty
PostSubject: Dog Park Altercation   Dog Park Altercation EmptySun Oct 23, 2011 10:13 pm

We decided to go up to base this evening to the dog park, and we arranged to meet with our friends who have the pit mix Caesar. There are usually a bunch of people up there on Sunday evenings, and it's always a good time for the dogs. Tonight, we got there and there was only one other dog besides Caesar. He and this other dog had been playing nicely for about 20 minutes before we got there with Ghost and Lulu, and the dogs got all excited when we got there. This crazy old lady had already judged that since Caesar is a pit mix, he MUST be a psycho killer, and when he got excited to see Ghost she flipped out and started yelling that our dogs were too aggressive. So her solution to the problem was to leash her dog INSIDE THE FRIGGIN PARK and proceed to drag him to the entrance. Of course the dogs still wanted to play, and before I could grab her (thank you limited mobility) Ghost ran at this other dog. The lady raised her hand and tried to strike Ghost. Yeah, she tried to hit my dog. I might have actually punched her if she'd actually hit her. She finally left, and lo and behold about 5 minutes later 2 base cop cars show up saying that they got a complaint about a pit bull attacking other dogs. Caesar is the sweetest dog, and is scared of everything. Oh, and the other dog wasn't a little yapper either, it was a 6 month old Newfoundland puppy who was playing how normal 6 month old puppies play.

Have any of you guys ever had a problem like this at a dog park? My poor friend was so mad after talking to the cops and convincing them that Caesar and Ghost were most definitely not aggressive and that the other lady violated the rules with the leash, she burst into tears. I was really pissed off too...

FWIW, the rest of the evening went smoothly, and as usual the truly aggressive dog of the group was Lulu. Stupid Cocker...

That's aweful! What did the base cops do once you and your friend explained? Do they have to investigate? I hope your friend won't stop taking Ceasar to the park. It's not his fault people are stupid!

The only problem I've had was two dogs ganging up on Stormy....which isn't that bad. I had more of an issue with the very pregnant owner of one bringing treats in (concerned that she would get knocked down) and her friend (the other owner) with what looked to be a month old infant attached to her chest. Their husbands were there, why couldn't they socialize in the little dog side and let the hubbies watch the dogs

The base cops came up like they meant business, and once we explained our side and they could clearly see Caesar was a big baby they left. They made sure to ask if we all lived in base housing though, because Pits aren't allowed in any government housing (total BS if you ask me). We don't, because the housing at this particular base is a total dump. I think she'll keep bringing him, she's just worried if people make complaints that they will lose him solely because he's a Pit. He's testing for his CGC next weekend, and will pass with flying colors. She's totally going to get the CGC vest and keep that on him whenever they're in public in the hopes of avoiding these problems.

PostSubject: Re: Dog Park Altercation   Dog Park Altercation EmptyMon Oct 24, 2011 12:16 am

My mom had a situation at the dog park with our pit/boxer mix, Bruiser. My mom took Bruiser to the park every morning and there was a pretty steady group of people who went at the same time. They all knew each other and once people get to know Bruiser, they understand he is a barker. Now I'm not gonna lie, my mom doesn't have a lot of control over Bruiser. although she would disagree. He sometimes gets a little rough with real submissive/scared dogs. Personally I don't trust Bruiser in a group of other dogs, but he was doing real well going to this park with this group of people. My mom also knew that when a real submissive dog came in it was time for her to leave. More because the other owners freak out which escalates Bruiser. He really is all bark.

One morning they were at the park with the usual group. Some guy came in with a dog who had her tail between her legs and was scared shitless. As soon as my mom saw them she went to get Bruiser, but the guy came into the park to fast and Bruiser went right after the dog. He basically cornered her and was barking at her. The guy started screaming and cursing at mom who was on her way to get Bruiser. The dumbass went to stick his hand in the middle and claims he got bit by Bruiser. He called the police who came later. The police said it looked like the guy had a little scratch on his hand and there was really no way of telling which dog did it. As the guy was leaving he threatened to shoot Bruiser if he ever saw them at the park again. The next day we got a notice from animal control that Bruiser was quarantined for 10 days and my mom had to pay a $50 fine. My mom worked with the trainer that worked with Frankie after that, but she hasn't taken him to the park since. He already has one strike against him. Another would classify him as a dangerous dog in our county, which is worse than wearing a scarlett letter.

One time someone tried to whip Frankie with thier retractable wire leash when Frankie went to check out his dog. I was there with people that knew me and Frankie well. Let's just say this guy left very quickly because because he was about to get a beat down if he made contact with my dog.

I found that there are a lot of people who have no business at a dog park. I generally only go for our husky meet ups now because I got tired of dumb ass dog owners.

The CGC will help Cesar tremendously!

Man, that sucks Dee. Some people just don't get it. The funny thing is, apparently the base gate guards were warning people coming in with dogs that there was an aggressive pit bull in the park and most of those people were friends coming to meet us. There was a lot of laughter at the "aggressive" pit bull who spent most of the time cowering in a corner after being chased there by little yappers Razz

I would have thought that the people coming on base would be a little cooler, but apparently not. I'm a bit nervous about the parks down in Pensacola, because I've heard stories of people coming in with nasty little yappers, not controlling their dogs, and then freaking out when their dogs start stuff. Really people?

I agree 100% with you. I went to a dog park over the weekend and there was this other husky puppy male that is a month younger then Durbin. Durbin is about 5 months now. But anyways everytime that they are there the other husky puppy attackes Durbin and not in a puppy way they are growling and crying when they fight so the guy pulls his husky off Durbin and always say hes so sorry he doesnt know why he attackes other dogs its his roommates stupid dog that made him that way. So back to my story on Friday I went there and he was there I havent see them in about a month so Durbin and the other one are playing just fine, but the other one finds a stick stuck in the ground and starts chewing it. Durbin wants the stick to so whats the other one do as soon as Durbin walks near the stick he attacks Durbin. They both are crying & growling Durbin is on top of the other husky. The guy is laughing and tells me to let them figure out who's top dog!! I WAS SOOOO PISSED its not ok for Durbin to think he can just full out fight with ANY OTHER DOG. So i have never broken up a fight in my life needless to say I got bit by one of them but lucky they are only puppies so it didnt brake the skin. I think next time I see that a$$hole I will just leave the park.

Your dog park allows puppies that young? IMHO I wouldn't take a puppy until they are at least 6 months. You never know who has their shots and who hasn't finished them. I'm technically not suppose to take Stormy to the one park since he is still intact, but since he has is "fixing" appointment next month it isn't a problem yet. If he starts showing aggression I'll stop taking him til after his appointment.

Yeah parks allow puppies as long as they have all their shots. I think hes fine no one ever says anything about it. The vet said he was fine as well once he got all his puppy shots. IMHO I think that waiting that long isnt a good idea I don't think Durbin would be as laid back/confident as he is if I waited that long to have him play with other dogs then just a few that we see at my apartment off and on.

Hmmm. I've taken my boys probably 75 times or more now to 10+ different dog parks and haven't had any significant issues. Maybe us dumb redneck Okies are just more responsible. I really find that hard to believe though, probably just been lucky.

We usually have fun at dog parks. The only problem we've had is Siku sometimes finds dogs that she decides she has to growl at and crush. She sounds horrible! You'd think she was trying to kill the dog, but if you watch her, she only puts her body weight on the dog and rarely puts her mouth on it. But that's not much of a comfort for owners who aren't used to that kind of play. If you just let them work it out and get the other dog to tell her off, then she's fine and won't do it again. It's only a real problem when the other dog is too submissive and doesn't tell her off. Then I have to put her on a leash. But, thankfully, that doesn't happen too often.

Worst thing I've seen at a dog park was a huge pitt go after a corgi. I do'nt know why the pitt owner even brought his dog to the park. It was very clear he did not like other dogs and just followed his owner around the whole time (i.e. would have been great to just take for a walk!). Siku went up to it and tried to jump on him when we first got there and he went after her a little and all the owner did was yell at Siku for jumping on his dog! You're at a dog park idiot! Dogs are going to try and play with your dog!

On another note, there was a 8 month old pitt at the park we went to a couple of days ago and it played great with both Elara and Siku. It was nice finding a dog tough enough and with enough energy to play with the huskies.

I think that was the final straw with this lady, because Caesar and Ghost always play super rough for like the first 10 or 15 minutes, but they know each other. I feel the same way as you though, it's great to have a dog that Ghost can really burn energy and play rough with.

Frankie totally does the same thing. If the other owner says they're not worried I let it be because I know Frankie isn't going to hurt it. When the other owner freaks out, Frankie then escalates so I intervene. My favorite though is when Frankie gets these dogs who really want to run and play and then they change their mind and hide.....this drives Frankie batty and he will follow them relentlessly trying to convince them that they really do want to play.

Frankie loves playing rough with the pitties and I love when he finds one that gives it right back to him the same way.

PostSubject: Re: Dog Park Altercation   Dog Park Altercation EmptyMon Oct 24, 2011 11:30 pm

This past sunday I went to the dog park with my boyfriend and friend and my dog. This lady comes in with this giant massive type of dog. and if you know massive types.. they are giant this one was big to almost a great dane size, My dog is 7months... and 63 lbs. and half ish in size of the dog... she was fine with them wrestling but everytime my husky would go behind the dog... not humping but you know to try to get the dog fall in a dominant game play, and not aggressive. she would freak saying get your dog off of mine... I dont want your dog or others humping my dog... and how she thinks domination is an agression game.... and they were playing so well. and so on her dog even layed full body on mine and elvis wanted to take his turn.well after the 4th time of it happening and finally started giving me attitude, i basicly got in an argument with her. I explained that its domination and how its not an aggression game specially when both dogs are not showing any agression and are having fun and how my dog isnt humping and how he cant even reach anyways... either way its how dogs play.. she kept arguing like keep your dog off of mine. and i explained how im not flipping bout your dog laying on mine and all that stuff mine is just trying to make your fall so he has his turn. and she kept going more. so i got so mad i said fine keep your dog away from me mine if you want mine to stop. because im not going to stop my dog when both dogs are playing. if you dont like it than keep yours away or leave.. and learn how all breeds interact and how dogs play. than she said she cant keep her dog away if he is playing. im like your going have to if you want mine to stop "Humping" yours. So keep yours away from mine and ill keep mine away from yours. and i walked away. I pissed her off so bad she left right afterwards. I kind of felt bad... but i hate dealing with owners who dont under stand play... and how they can say my dog was playing bad when he is 7 months and the sweetest.

my boyfriend and friend was so mad they almost joined in on the argument. a lot of people were annoyed when she kept telling every dog who tried owner to get off her dog... when its dog nature.

another time there was a guy who was with his daughter "30 yrs old" at the dog park watching her dog play. the dog was some lab breed that is really skinny. and my dog was playing. they kinda freaked at me because of how my dog wrestles.... and how they think hes agressive. i kept elvis away. Elvis's friend Nova who was 8 months at the time... was playing with the dog. out of no where because the lab dog is submissive and laid on her back while nova tried playing... the owner picked up nova and threw him off.... wow i couldnt believe my eyes. nova is only 40 lbs maybe a lil less. and a puppy... like come on dude the owner blew up. like i agree dont throw someones dog because you dont understand play.

I have so many stories. I finally found a park where people know how dogs play and Elvis enjoys it.

I have only had a few issues at the park I take Neo too. The dogs are mostly well behaved, and they all play well with each other. A lady once brought a smaller german shepard mix dog that was overly possesive of her. She just sat on the bench the whole time with the dog setting next to her. When another dog would get too close to the owner, the dog would jump up and growl and snap. They had no business being there. The last time we took Neo to the park. There was a woman who had two collie mix dogs. One was fine, and the other was being aggressive towards the other dogs. The owner decided to leash the aggressive dog and sit in the middle of the park. Really?
Come on now, lol

Worse than the dog park was the last visit we had at PetSmart. It was adoption day, and I guess it is also bring your dog to work day. One of the trainers had her husky there with her. I have spoken to her before, and was excited to see her husky. I walked Neo over to them, and her husky and Neo immediatly went at it. I have never seen Neo act aggressive until now. Later on, I was waking around the dog food isles, and I swear she was husky stalking me. we turned a corner and there she was again with her dog, and him and Neo immediatly started trying to go at it again.
Sigh

I've had pleasant experiences at our local dog park. Drogo has gotten ganged up on a couple times but nothing truly aggressive or something he couldn't handle himself. He never is involved in any remotely aggressive displays at the park, he just stays at a safe distance and watches or decides to mingle with the people there instead lol. He got his face humped last time we were there. He handled it like a champ though. XD

She didn't get peed on, but Lulu (our Cocker) got humped by my friend's 5 lb Yorkie. That was the funniest thing I think I've ever seen.

On the one hand, you become a fierce defender of the ways in which your little one is perfectly ordinary — all the things he or she can do that are just like what everybody else does. And yet, you never lose sight of how absolutely extraordinary that very ordinariness is, how difficult, remarkable and rewarding that fight to be 'just like everybody else' has been."  -Gwen Cooper, "Homer's Odyssey"

Drogo's brother got into the action when Stormy was being humped by Champ. It was a chain of 4 dogs with a female as the last to join. I have to admit it was slightly funny. It was two huskies, a husky mix and a boxer. ♫ Which one of these is not like the other ♫

lol! Drogo didn't get peed on that time, but he was smelling another dog's groin on a separate occasion and he lifted his leg and squirted Drogo in the face. Rolling Eyes
