I have a couple of dogs not my husky. I have harness and leads. They do get an awful doggy smell probably due to dogs water and the likes. I wash them in a bucket with washing powder and hang them on washing line to dry. It doesn't get rid of smell. I can't put them in washer due to the metal bits which on a spin would probably break it. Now its winter in the UK and hanging on the line to dry us not going to happen. Any one have any remedies for getting dog odour out the harnesses as it never seems to go.

Let me know if you find the secret too! Echo plays really rough and his collar NEVER stays clean for more than 8 hours. Unfortunately I have no secret. I had to switch to buying him rubber based collars. Easy clean up...just rinse and dry, and it NEVER SMELLS!

Currently I used one made out of recycled bicycle tires and I have never looked back!

Vinegar can do it. Just mix vinegar with the water you are washing in and let it soak for a while then rinse thoroughly. You can treat baking soda the same way.

I mix together water, white vinegar, and a few (usually no more than three) drops of lavender essential oil. The lavender essential oil makes the solution smell much more pleasant, and I have yet to have a dog be allergic to it. Lavender essential oil also seems to work as a mild, natural pest repellent.

Never thought of that so thanks I will use vinegar.

How do the rubber collards hold up? I got Thor a nylon style collar and he scratched it and chewed at hit; granted it was a little big; that's my fault. It was a cool "Thor" collar and unfortunately my Thor is a chewer of most things, including his harness he's managed to chew through in two months (the pat that goes over his chest). I put the "Thor" collar way until either this neck is a little bigger or he stops chewing on his gear. Additionally with the cloth style gear he rolls in the mud which requires them to be washed weekly if not twice a week. He has two collars and three leads because he likes to try and get to the mud so much. Going to need a new harness as of today too. SMH.

Thanks for the question. The rubber collars hold up really well in my opinion. I was skeptical too at first. But with all the other dogs grabbing at his collar when they wrestle and Echo pulling on leash all the time, the collar has yet to tear or show signs of wear. It's a bit more expensive than conventional fabric collars so I do put more of an effort in keeping it in one piece. I'll remove it or scold other dogs if I see them biting/tugging at it, and I always hang it up when I get home. Obviously Echo can't chew on it when it's on him =D. So the probability of it getting destroyed from his own mouth is slim to none.

LOL to the mud. Echo and I go to the dog park twice a day, and he likes to submit and wrestle on his back on top of digging and burying his muzzle in the muddy park puddles. So his collar gets diiirrttty. I tried everything before including baking soda, dish detergent, vinegar, salt, scrubbing it with a toothbrush. Short of banging it with a hammer, the smell would always come back in a day or so. It was AWFUL. Huskies aren't known to stink but I could smell him from a mile away with fabric collars. So I researched anti-stink collars and found a company that made ones out of recycled bicycle tires. Never looked back.

This is what I use. Buckle is made of metal so husky can pull all he wants and it's not going to break. Chose the max reflective cause the reflective stuff is made of a flexible plastic material so it won't smell and it's sewn onto a rubber backing. (Helps your dog light up at night too!) All the other ones that have fancy designs look like they're fabric stitched onto the rubber collar...you don't want that cause it really defeats the purpose of a truly rubber collar.

Disclaimer, I don't work for the company nor am I sponsored, I just really genuinely like their product after months of use. It's super easy to clean, just run it under the tap to get the dirt out and dry it with a towel. Some caveats, the underside of the collar obviously rubs against your dog, and while it doesn't tug at his fur, it does leave a hint of rubber smell on his neck, but that definitely smells better than a fermenting collar. Also you need to make sure you dry the buckle & metals parts well both inside and out after cleaning or it will rust.

Thanks for the feedback and all the good insight. I'll look into. I just got his a new harness and collar yesterday, noting for now because he needed ones. Thor would scratch at the fabric collars with his nails until they started to frail apart. his harness he'd chew on the part that went down his chest so i'm trying a different style and brand that he can't do that. it fits more like a piece of pup clothing. Fingers crossed these hold up.
