PostSubject: 9 month old not eating much   9 month old not eating much EmptyMon Jul 30, 2018 9:12 pm

My pup is a male he eats very little. He's fit and healthy. He was weighed last week and was 23.5 kilo by vet who said he's healthy. He's shedding at the moment and looks so skinny. He eats once a day mostly sometimes twice. I feed him twice but most the time does not eat on a morning at all even though his food is put out. Is his weight ok for his age. I realise huskies are not eaters. I feed him Arden Grange.

Need a little more info.....how much actual food does he eat per day? How old is he? At around one or full grown they tend to want to eat once daily and dependent on the food will typically eat around 1.5-2 cups daily. His weight is perfect, at breed standard, huskies are a medium sized dog breed, so even for a male 50 pounds is normal and standard.

He's 9 month old and eats roughly a cup or less. I still put out 1.5 cups twice daily.

He may be close to full grown. I might do 1 cup twice a day and see what he does with that. I prefer to feed a half cup in the am and one cup in the pm, and both of my girls do well that way. Since he is still a puppy I would try the 1 cup twice a day and see if he eats all of that, and adjust from there. My husky mix girl is not a big eater so I do understand, they tend to self regulate so I wouldn't be too worried. Food you are feeding looks good. Smile

Lycan1, a healthy Husky is going to look thin by most people definition of a healthy dog.  Most dogs in the US and Europe or overweight by definition.  Oh, they're not obese but they are overweight to a degree that is unhealthy - and the shocking thing is that most people don't realize it.

At 50 pounds (23kg) your boy is just about the 'correct' weight for an adult!

To appease the public, (back yard) breeders are breeding heavier, larger Sibes - since everyone know that a Husky is a big dog.  Well, they aren't!  They're a medium sized dog who generally has the ability to regulate what they do with what they eat.

Most bags of dogs food suggest a quantity that is way beyond what a Husky needs Most suggest 3 cups more or less while most Huskies can easily get by on half that!  If he's growing on 1 cup (meaning he's leaving food) then he really doesn't need more.

Thanks, he's big but skinny he's shedding at the moment which I'm getting at least a bucket per day off him. The shedding has made a big difference as he looks really thin. I got him from a man who has a team of dogs that were run 10 - 20 miles daily they didn't look like your typical husky they were on the lean side like him. He is fit and healthy with plenty of exercise. I suppose I'm comparing him to other huskies I've seen which are a lot chunkier however mine is a lot taller. Thanks for the info.

@Lycan1 my girl is 2 now, she is very lean, tall for the breed and weighs 60lbs, 57 or thereabouts in the summer. She does not eat any more than she knows she needs. If she needs more she eats all that I have put out. Come winter she will start eating all of her food when she is most active. I think your pup is at a good size and that he may just be slowing down for now. I do not think it is anything yo be concerned with unless he stops eating entirely. Everything sounds good! Very Happy

I'm not sure how much more he will grow I thought they stopped growing at 18 month ? He's a lot taller than a lot of the huskies I've bumped into but a lot leaner.

Even my wolf hybrids, which are larger animals, don't eat the recommended amount for their weights by US standards. Yes, compared to most US dogs they look a bit on the thin side but, they are not underweight.

They are free fed, meaning with the whole animal raw diet I feed, they gorge and fast, by their choice. For example, the four of them will eat an entire 80 Lb deer in two days, then, not eat for three days after that, even with food available. That's a natural, wild wolf way for them to eat and, being lean and fit is natural for them.

In the winter, they will graze a bit all day, in the summer, they prefer to eat only at night, while I'm sleeping and, it's cooler and, yes that means they eat in their crates so, crates need washed every morning but, the dogs are happy and doing well that way. Even my four month old has taken to night time eating now and, nothing all day unless I give her a special meal like yogurt over bits of meat.

As long as he is eating at some point in every 24 hour period and, is healthy, don't fret how much he eats. Also don't fret if he takes to a more wolf like eating habit of gorging one day, then not eating or barely eating for 2-3 days before gorging again. That's natural to a wild canine and, in my opinion, won't hurt a dog if that's how they prefer to eat.
