Hey, i shot some pictures of Oakley and to me, he seems really thin for his age. He's 2.5years old and weighs around 46.5lbs. He just looks really thin. Heres some pics, yes/no? [img] [/img] [img] [/img]

Tyler, I don't think you need to worry much. How tall is he? Yes he is on the light end for males, but as he matures he will fill out. Also, you haven't had him long, let him adjust to every thing, it may take up to a month or so, especially if you changed his food. As long as he has a healthy appetite, and is fine in every other respect, and your vet says he's healthy, I think he's fine. Breed standard for males is 45-60 pounds and 21-23 inches high.

Yeah im not sure how tall he is but maybe im just being paranoid about his weight. Ill just take your advice and let him fill out. We have him on the Blue Wilderness Chicken flavor food. He likes it and usually eats twice a day. Sometimes just once, such as tonight, he didnt eat dinner but he ate breakfast. Also, he threw up quite a bit today on the carpet. It was mostly water but there was some food in there too, this was maybe 4 hours ago after he wouldn't eat. Maybe he just has a stomach bug. Thanks for the quick reply

Haha, I have the same problem, my girl has been forever skinny, I am slowly learning that this is the way she needs to be. Keep an eye on the throwing up, probably nothing. Many here will say they have self regulating dogs, Miya is a good example, some days she barely eats, other days great appetite. Imho, medium sized dogs, as well as large size tend to mature a little slowly, I'd roughly say 3 years old is mature. So between getting used to his new home, and just being a typical husky, it may take some time for him to add some weight. again though he is at breed standard. He does look to be longer legged and short hair, like my girl, so you should be able to tell better than some of the other huskies here, as far as seeing rib bones, and hips, if they are noticeable by looking(his pics don't seem like you can see his bones), then he needs to add weight.

We also have a husky that sometimes refuses to eat. Its completely fine. Plus dogs throwing up when they don't eat is normal too, we have that happening every now and then when our girl refuses to eat. As long as Oakley is playful and active theres nothing to worry about in my opinion. Also the "sports" huskies tend to be really thin in nature. Our boy Snow is 22.5 inches and weights 49 pounds. On the other hand when we work him out (Running and some pulling) he tends to pull some beef up really quickly thats because his sport origin i guess. He then looks more filled up and beefy in general

If you're really worried you can ask the vet for his/her opinion the next time you take your dog to them. I was kind of worried about Yukon's weight too (he's only 36lbs - which is 9lbs below the breed standard - and around 18 months old) so I asked my vet what she thought. She said that maybe he could stand to gain a couple of pounds, but he wasn't really too underweight. Also there's isn't a lot you can do to fix a picky eater who straight up refuses to eat more than 1-2 cups of food per day. Stupid dog. Just like people, dogs have all sorts of different body types. It's actually healthy for your dog to be lean, as long as they're not super underweight. Height, age, diet preferences/finickiness all play a role in this too. Your dog wont starve himself either, so as long as you offer him a decent amount of food and exercise everyday he'll be a healthy weight for his specific body type.

My boy was like that at that age. 44 lbs at 2 years old, matured to 50 lbs by the age of 3. Give it time. _________________

So 45-60 pounds is a normal Husky weight? Finley is 80 pounds and he isnt even 2 years old yet. He does eat different amounts on different days. He doesnt look over weight at all. Just a big Husky boy. Are some Huskies 80+ pounds?

Yes 45-60lbs is the breed standard, but I wouldn't sweat it too much if your dog is over or below that. There are several members on here with 70+ lbs Huskies. Sometimes large Huskies are mixed breeds, or the result of poor breeding, or sometimes they just simply turn out big. The important thing is that they look healthy for their weight and body type (you want to be able to feel their ribs, but also have a slight amount of fat surrounding it). Everything else is secondary in my opinion. |
