Hi guys! My friend's dog ran away about a day ago. We have done EVERYTHING to look for him. we are afraid that he is either too far gone or that someone has taken him. I was just curious if anyone had any ideas on what we could do. it seems like we have tried everything, but we don't want to give up!

This is Rocket. He was lost in the Peru/Grissom area in Indiana.

Hopefully he is just out exploring and will come back on his own time. He sure is a pretty fella.

In the meantime you could always post up "Reward" signs.

I would call around all local animal shelters within 25 miles and let them be aware. Keep calling back even if you've called once before.

Post sign's everywhere and call business' close to you're friends house to see if maybe they have seen the dog.

Put an ad on Craigslist and keep checking listings to see if someone has posted him up.

Call vet's offices within 25 miles to see if maybe someone has brought a dog in meeting his description and leave a phone number, so they can contact you if someone does.

Call you're local Husky Rescue and let them be aware, just in case he end's up in their care.

If you have access to a 4-wheeler/dirt bike, take it through the woods and search. Make sure to have a leash with you, just in case you find him.

Good luck finding the dog!

I would offer a reward in all lost dog postings you make. And I agree that letting local vets offices know about him missing( if you think he was taken) is a good idea. My vets office has a bulletin board for things like this. I hope he wasn't taken though and he is found Sad

I actually have REWARD! on my girls' tags. I read on some article it was more likely to get your dog returned if lost. As sucky as it is, there are awful people in this world and you always need to account for them. A REWARD! line on my girls' tags give that extra push to help find their owner (me). So definitely post reward signs. I would probably call vets/shelters, anything animal related within 100 miles.

Good luck!

Just an update on Rocket. he's been missing since May 10th. It turns out he was stolen and the person who stole him is a "dog flipper" and sold him as soon as we located him. We called the cops but they said theres notthing they can do. So now we are just trying to figure out who the lady sold him to. Sad

Wow, that's crazy!! I'd be doing some hardcore investigating!!

I hope it all turns out and that you're able to get him back.

He wasn't microchipped? That would have helped.

Agreed. Get that thief arrested asap once you guys can find him/her if possible, then hopefully the police will be able to interrogate him/her or something. In the meantime if he/she sold the dog online you could search through the internet to try and see who bought him, where they live, contact information, etc.

I hope everything works out for you guys, good luck!

I go to a small private school and there's around 20-30 kids total, there also really open about things like, you make your own schedule, cellphones and swearing is ok, and my teacher brings her dog to the school all the time. So one day I was hold the dog(a yorkie) and I was reading his tag and along with other info, it said NEEDS MEDS DAILY. So I asked her what kind of meds he's on and she said its just there to deter anyone from stealing. I thought thats a pretty good Idea along with the REWARD! thing.

That's Not Right. Even though I don't consider dogs someones property, Rocket technically was your friends property and so the "dog flipper", could and should be brought in on stealing and selling someone's private property without the owners permission. I definitely think you and your friend should consider getting a lawyer and pressing charges. You should then compromise with the "dog flipper" and tell her that you'll drop the charges if she gives up any information leading to the dogs safe return home, and then and only then you won't continue to press charge. I.e if you follow her information and you find the dog hurt or even (hopefully not) dead. If that happens then you continue press charges for theft but also (I think you can do this) unlawful death or injury of a pet.

Here's something I copied from a website doing some research.
"Under the law in some states, it is a felony to steal a pet or knowingly buy a stolen pet. If a police officer is reluctant to take down a complaint for the theft of a pet, remind him or her that pets are property under the law and that pet thieves are subject to the same penalties."
Website: http://public.homeagain.com/your-rights-when-losing-a-pet.html

Here's another website with some more info: http://www.ehow.com/list_6609437_dog-theft-laws.html

I find it Completely unbelievable that the police said "they can't do anything about"

When we found out, we sent the cops over there to look and at the point, the lady still had Rocket. But he said since there wasn't drugs or anything else involved he couldn't go in her house. He basically just asked her if she had him and she said no. We have it posted all over our towns facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/467551730003307/468257323266081/?notif_t=like) (https://www.facebook.com/FindingRocket) and thats when someone that lives acrossed the street from the dog flipper told us that she got rid of him. The police are really no help, we have multiple people that saw her with Rocket and people who can make a statement saying she goes through dogs like mad. And my friend lives on the county line so now the police are saying since he was technically taken from the other county theres really nothing they can do.
He's not microchipped unfortunately, but we have called almost every shelter in Indiana to alert them and we've called several vets nearby. She's even offering a 500$ reward for him, but we just cant find out where she shipped him off to Sad
Whats the difference between a stolen car and a stolen dog?

I'm sure you have tried a lot of things by now but I found this on the internet hopefully this can help in someway since the police aren't.

Write an email or letter to your local newspapers to let them know about the theft. Include a photo of your pet and any details that you think may interest a reporter, especially genuine details that pull at the heartstrings, like your pet being a therapy dog, the best friend of a handicapped child, or rescued from a tragic situation. If there have been other pet thefts in the area, perhaps there’s a pet crime wave in your town, and that's definitely a story for the paper.

Call your local radio station and offer them the same story. You might find a DJ that will take up your cause.

Contact your local Dog Warden, Animal Control, or Animal Police. Let them know of the issue.

Write letters to your local papers and continue to post on Craig’s List to let the general public know that your dog was stolen and implore them to watch their dogs carefully and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Contact laboratory animal departments of universities and hospitals in your area. Go to the labs and describe your animal to laboratory personnel. Post a photo of your animal in the laboratory.

I'd also look into hiring a lawyer to sue her. Being sued may make her more inclined to tell you where she sent him. I'd also talk about suing the police (maybe have your lawyer go talk to the captain or something, and mention that you are looking into a legal course of action against them) just to see if that doesn't get them to do something.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine. Her blue heeler mix took off and she spent three weeks looking for her. Her family was walking along the beach one day and this guy walks up with their dog (Lottie looks pretty distinct, hard to mistake or duplicate her.) My friend confronts him and he claims the dog is his. She looks him right in the eyes and tells the dog to sit, which she does. Then she tells the dog to lay down, which she does. He claims that you can do that with any dog, so she says "Lottie, hugs" and Lottie gives her a hug. By now the guy is looking nervous and she suggests they go to the vet to get her microchip checked. He admits defeat and she removes the muzzle he has on her dog (Lottie does not require a muzzle of any sort) and throws it at him. Tells him to get his own dog and if she ever sees him again, he's in big trouble. Needless to say, things can work out. I hope you guys find out where Rocket ended up!

Wow, that's crazy! What are the odds of spotting your stolen dog on the beach?! Good for her!

I'm so sorry to hear about Rocket. We have heard of a few dog 'flippers' around here too. They sell the dogs on craigslist really fast!

At LEAST you know who stole him. She might still have the name or number of the person she sold it to. Emails maybe? I agree with cinnamon and would pursue legal action at this point.

Just remember, she will do whatever is easiest for her. If you're persistent in getting Rocket back, she might cave and just give up. You never know until you try! The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
