Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

Layla - black beauty Empty
PostSubject: Layla - black beauty   Layla - black beauty EmptyFri Aug 04, 2017 12:22 pm

So my wife and I found Layla at a local animal shelter and Layla seems to be about 2.5 years old. She is on the small side and weighs only about 35lbs.

She also seems to have come trained in many ways. First, she hardly says anything! She doesn't bark or growl or howl. She may yelp if you catch her fur as you are putting on a collar or something. Also, when she becomes excited by other animals or when she is being introduced to another dog.

She is fully house trained! What a blessing. She is car trained so she rides in the car well without noise or bad behavior.

She is not motivated by food, treats, or toys at all. But she does get bored.

She behavior inside and outside the is SO very different. She is calm and easy going inside. She is very affectionate and I think is her main "training" language. Outside I can't hardly seem to get her attention. This makes training hard.

She does need exercise. My general practice is one long (maybe 1/2 hour) walk and two shorter walks a day.

She is not crated trained by we have a room where she sleeps with a crate in it.

You will need to do a longer walk than that most likely depending on how fast you walk. Mine get a half hour for their short walk in the morning. We do 2-3 times that in the evening. Most of us are doing in the 3 mile range a day with our dogs. Some more, some a little less depending on the demands of the dog. Being properly exercised will help with the boredom you experience and the attention issues you have with her outside. Time will also help with the attention issues. She is young so you have a lot of time before she may slow down, if she slows down at all. My girl is 8 and she can do 10 miles a day like nothing is happening. It is amazing how many really great dogs who have obviously had a lot of time invested in them end up in shelters. I have 3 and all have come house broken and with basic commands down. My latest came leash trained which is not easy to do with a husky.

35 pounds is small but within the range of normal for breed standard for females. We love pictures here. We have a sticky in the top right of the page that gives how to upload pictures. There is an updated version to it that helps with different tablets as well.

Welcome to the forum!
