| I know this is a very controversial topic but my puppy stopped coming consistently.
I started letting him off leash when he was around 10 weeks old. In the beginning he did not come consistently especially when there are distractions around like birds and other dogs. With consistent training I got him to the point where he would consistently come even while playing with other dogs or chasing birds.
He has learned to stay with me during off leash walks. Sometimes he runs in front, sometimes behind me but he is always looking where I am and comes automatically back to me without me saying a word. He still does this as long as there are no distractions. He is now 4 1/2 months old.
Since a week I am noticing that he is no longer reliable with other dogs and food laying on the ground.
When he plays with a dog and we decide it's time to say goodbye he comes to me and we walk in a different direction then the other owner and his dog. After around 100 yards he turns around and bolts back to the other dog. (He doesn't do this every time but once in a while) When I call him while he runs away he doesn't listen and if he is already with the other dog I doubt that he can even hear me. The last time he did that I didn't even notice that he was running away after another 100 yards. So I ended up walking to him. I did not try waiting for him to come back.
My question is what should I do when he doesn't react to my recall command. Punishing him when he comes back will surely only make the problem worse. For now I'm not rewarding him if I have to yell more then one time. Should I go to him or wait for him to come?
Is here someone who has teached his siberian husky a reliable recall even with distractions?
The Problem is we don't have dog parks in Germany at least not in my city. So if I don't fix this problem he can't no longer play and run around with other dogs. I enjoy seeing him playing and he loves it too so I don't want to take that away from him.

| Don't forget, your dog is not ordinary dog. It's THE Siberian Husky. At 2-3 months old my puppy didn't really runned away, and if she would try, i'm faster than her. but later she started running way faster than me, so than i realised my dog is getting Huskyish. Yeah, that's right. Running is in their nature. you can't trust him off leash. They are really bad off leash, so the only thing i can tell you: Don't let your dog off leash, and if you want him running freely, get a 15m long leash and "you know what to do". good day |

| Maybe you can have him on leash in places you aren't too sure he'll come back and then if you're in a place where he can play with another dog, you can let him off leash. Then when he comes back to you and it's time to say goodbye, hook him back onto the leash and walk away. That seems like a good compromise to me that still lets him enjoy playing with other dogs. I lived in Germany around 10 years ago, so I'm familiar with the general look and feel of parks and trails there (though, in full disclosure, I did live in the north, though I did travel to Bayern), and a part on-, part off-leash walk might be a good idea if you're not totally comfortable with his recall. Keep in mind also that he will likely backtrack in his training and response to commands when he goes into the "teenage" phase, around eight months. You may notice he starts testing you and goes back a few steps in his training. But, if you're consistent and are willing to train through that, it's always possible you could have one of the rare huskies who can be trusted off leash. Just take caution and be safe. |

| It's still early days my friend, what you are trying to achieve will take easily a year and more. I've been working on Thane's recall for almost 2 years he is great without distractions and he is good with most distractions like I can call him off of food, prey, other dogs/humans, he will always stay around me when I walk around. But his greatest weakness is when he is hyper or has pent up energy his attention span and most of his training goes out the window. We have been working on better structuring that on our walks and off leash time (pet stores are the worst -.-). So far so good but it can be better.
In terms of how to punish a failed recall, retrieve him and put him in a sit and wait about 5 mins. I have found this to be a very effective timeout method. |
