Husky Temper Tantrum Empty
PostSubject: Husky Temper Tantrum   Husky Temper Tantrum EmptyFri Sep 06, 2013 11:05 am

Hi all - I have recently been experiencing a behavioral issue with my one-year old girl, Sasha. It just started a few days ago after we came home from a week and a half long camping vacation.

All of a sudden since we got back, when I take her out she decides that she is not ready to go inside and throws a temper tantrum by, literally, throwing herself on the ground and not moving. Now she is a puppy, but as we all know, a one year old Husky is not a little dog ! She is 70 pounds of brat lying on the floor ! She obviously knows that there is NOTHING I can do to get her inside. HELP !! How do #1 get her inside when she throws a tantrum and #2 STOP the tantrum from happening in the first place ?!

Thanks in advance for your advice !!
Theresa

Cheese or beef jerky... My pup used to do the same thing, sat, laid, or stood and just refused to come in. He was little so I would just pick his butt up, but now that he's almost 40 lbs its not as easy to pick him up. So I started luring him up with something really great, a normal dog treat wasn't enough, it had to be something really special. So it took me putting it under his nose and leading him up and giving him bites the whole way at the beginning. Over a couple weeks the behavior pretty much went away, now he always gets a bite of something yummy at the very top. We have about 10 steps to the front door of our building and then two big flights of stairs to get to our floor. Now I let him off leash when we go in and he races to the top. By the time I get there, he's standing and waiting for his treat.

Hahahha. I am right there with you, my Siku talks back to me whenever I tell him to do something. Just use treats and kind of retrain her. Huskies tend to really like their routines, and it probably through her off with you guys being gone. When you want her to come inside, hold a treat and say inside and don't give it to her until she walks through the door. Make sure its something that she really likes and put it close to her nose if you have to. Eventually she will get back in the habit and know that inside means inside.

YES ! She definitely really enjoyed living outside !! lol I certainly can't blame her !!! I felt like using treats would be reinforcing the bad behavior, but I get that she has been off her routine and probably does need to be "retrained" to listen when I tell her to come in!

Thanks for your quick responses !!!

Jasparr does this sometimes. At first I did the pick up, and/or tickle his belly until he gets up, but currently I've just started going in and closing the door (my end of the leash with me inside, his end still on him) and being left outside alone with me inside is enough to convince him he wants to get up and come inside as well.

Cheese, and more specifically swiss cheese.  Juno has never turned her back on a small chunk of her favorite food.  She even got loose once from the dog park and we retrieved a piece from our pocket---always carry some at the dog park.  She came running right to us.
