Giardia Question Empty
PostSubject: Giardia Question   Giardia Question EmptySun Mar 10, 2013 10:50 am

So Luna woke up the other day with vomiting and diarrhea. Any because I'm an overprotective puppy parent, we went into the vet this morning. I guess it was a good thing we did because turns out she has Giardia. Now she's on a boatload of medicine (well okay 3) and a bland diet. My question is I want to switch Luna from BBW to TOTW or something similar in quality. Can I switch from the bland diet to the new kibble without negative side effects? Also, Luna is in daycare 2 times a week and I think it might be where she picked the Giardia up, I'm going to alert them tomorrow about it but I'm worried about reinfection. She is supposed to go on Wednesday but I'm skeptical now. Any thoughts?

I would think switching her food after the bland diet would be okay but I really am not and expert I am able to switch my dogs food pretty easy. I could contact the day care about the giardia and I would not be taking her for a couple of weeks to get her thru the meds. There was some dogs here that got Giardia at the dog park because some dogs put their feet in the water. The dog park stopped providing buckets you need to bring your own now..

Keep the pup on the bland diet for the duration of the medication treatment for the giardia. Once the meds and giardia have cleared then switch. I've actually had giardia myself twice, once you've have it you always carry it dormant in your body so reinfection is super easy, and let me tell you the absolute pain and discomfort you get in the stomach after eating you don't want much more than bland.

Giardia comes from stagnant water sources, or infected poop- definitely contact the daycare if that is the suspected point of origin.
