Need Some Help With Food Empty
PostSubject: Need Some Help With Food   Need Some Help With Food EmptySun Nov 18, 2012 10:27 pm

Hi everyone,

I joined this forum because my little girl is having some trouble with her food. Let me fill you in.

I have a beautiful 9 month old husky who unfortunately has had some trouble with food since day one. When we first brought her home any food we gave her gave her instant diarreah. After a month of trying to find a good food and having frequent vet checks our vet had us feed her hills prescription wd. This food instantly gave her solid stool and we thought we were set. However after a few days we realized she was getting rashes all over her belly and her legs. We then switched her to nutro chicken brown rice and oatmeal. This loosened her stool again, kept her rashes, and also gave her bladder problems.

I then decided to eliminate grains and put her on blue basics grain free chicken and potato. This food was a godsend when it came to her bladder problems(peeing in the house when left alone) and also her rashes. Both problems fully cleared up after about a week. However her stool is still soft, not completely liquid but not where it needs to be. So I was thinking maybe it was the chicken.

I went and bought blue basics salmon and potato however i realized this is not grain free.
So I then went and bought blue wilderness salmon and potato however this has chicken in it and is also very high in protein. Our girl gets a lot of exercise however she is definitely not training to be a sled dog.

Any ideas on which food i should give my pup, preferably one of this since i already have them however i can return them and get her something else. Were so close to having her all set and im hoping to help her soon. Thanks.

I feed my pup Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon flavour. It is grain free. How long are you taking to introduce her to new foods? And how much is she being fed?

I introduced her to the grain free blue basics over two weeks and then she was on it alone for about 3 weeks. Her stool was the same from day one to today, which is soft. I give her about 1 1/4 cups twice a day. For a total of 2.5 cups/day.

Will the high protein content hurt her since. She is definitely active but like I said i dont train her to do sled races or anything. Thanks for the response.

There are some great posters on here that will definitely be able to help.

I don't think that would be a problem - Blue isn't sold as a performance food, so even if she isn't training to be a sled dog, it should be ok. Smile

I feed Cally BBW as I said and she is the laziest dog ever, she sleeps most of her time! The protein in it has not seemed to bother her. Sounds like you did it right by introducing over the span of two weeks Smile How old is she and how much does she weigh? Cally is 10 months old and around 46 pounds and I only feed her 2 cups per day. Sometimes when overfeeding it can cause soft stool I would suggest trying to cut back to 2 cups per day and see if that helps!

I second the cutting back. Koda is a fully grown, 60 lb male and when we feed BBW Salmon (we use it sometimes) we only feed him 2 cups a day. She is still young, so a little extra can't hurt, but I would definitely cut her back and see if that doesn't help. Sometimes when a food is too rich, it can cause some pretty loose stool

Thanks so much guys. Sounds like Cally is almost the same as my Zoie. Shes 9 months and 42 pounds. I will definitely start switching her to bbw salmon and potato tomorrow and ill try doing only one cup at a time. She eats so fast that sometimes i feel like she doesnt get enough, even though the vet says shes a perfect weight for her age. I appreciate the help.

If it makes you feel better, try adding in some frozen green beans... they are a low-calorie filler that shouldn't bother her stomach Smile

On the basics - if I am correct here, there is no Chicken formula. Were you feeding the turkey grain free?? I would stick with the Salmon Wilderness, but if you are worried you could always try Acana or Earthborn.

I'm gonna agree with everyone on this, extra food equals softer stools Smile Even on raw, if I over feed it results in cannon butt (if its a few days in the row. Now I gorge and fast for a day).

If her stool is still soft after feeding it for 2 weeks or more than there might be something that she is still allergic to in the food. It sounds like you have had chicken in all the food you have tried even if it wasn't the main protein source. For a budget conscience option, try Taste of the Wild, they have a single protein source in most of their food. You could also try Fromm Grain free or Merrick Grain Free if you have a little extra cash for the higher quality kibble. If price isn't a issue then there is alway a Raw diet which will beat any kibble out there and has been shown to really help with dogs that have food allergies.
