| lucky to have such cool places around me to be able to take my dog on after work hikes in the afternoon! Dolly sods wilderness is supposed to be the crown jewel back packing destination in the east and I know why and will hopefully never take it for granted. actually a dual part mission...get some exercise for the dogs after work and find an old abandoned hillbilly trail from the forest rd that was supposed to connect to a real trail the other dogs and people hopped across the stream, of course my dog did laps up and down it. buddies four month old rescue puppy came with us....said to have husky in him, but the jury is still out for now! |

| Holy bushwhack! Pretty sure I would get lost out east. Or run into plants and animals that I'm ignorant of.
That's dense right there. Bet it's a lot quieter in those hills too, eh? |

| I believe if I remember correctly from my year of studying WV history EONS ago, Dolly Sods is not a good representative of typical WV vegetation. I think there are plants and trees found there that do not exist anywhere else on the east coast until you get up into Canada. I grew up further south near Cranberry Glades, which is similar. I've always wanted to go to the Dolly Sods Wilderness. I looks beautiful...and full of snakes...and ticks...and bears... |

you do remember correctly! the area is sometimes described as 'a little bit of canada gone astray'. every week during the summer it seems there are new wildflowers to identify, or wild mushrooms or berries to eat. (only a population of 600 so there isn't much to do but go outside and explore hehe) lots of snakes and bears and critters, but not a lot of ticks around, though the vet did talk me into a lyme vacc. for the doggie and he is worth the $35 cost for sure! |
