| So, Nikki (Mermaidista) and I have been working to find a furever home for a 7 month old girl with just one eye. Our rescue isn't being very helpful at all, but one of the ones in Denver has said they'll take her in if we can get her there. I happen to be going to Denver next weekend, but I'm flying AirTran and they can't accomodate pets too large to fly as carry on. That leaves us scrambling to find transport at this time. I'm doing a ton of research but so far have hit dead ends, and most airlines won't accept cargo pets if the temperature is going to exceed 85 at any point on the fight.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | I haven't checked these places but here's one that sounds like they might be able to help but I don't know if there is any cost: http://network.bestfriends.org/2250/news.aspx
This sounds like they will transport but looks more commercial and will probably have a cost: http://www.movemydog.com/
I just did a Google search on 'Dog transport across US'.

| Thanks, Claudia. I will look into both of those. I've been sifting through a bunch of google stuff, and not getting much with airlines.
Kristina, I'm getting ready to contact Pilots N Paws, and Pet Airways told me that they're not taking reservations at this time.

| Thanks everyone for your ideas! We are excited that a very wonderful rescue has agreed to take her, but a shame it is so far! We appreciate your comments, and if anyone else has any other ideas, keep us posted! |

| Correct me if I'm wrong but I assume this is a Husky or Malamute? Is the pup still headed to Denver?

| That last one may not cover your area. What other rescues do is try to set up legs of "doable" drives and get volunteers in each area.
Len, it's a husky and she's adorable! |

| Did you try Husky Haven of Fl or South Florida Husky Rescue? Or a rescue in nearer states?! lol. It's hard enough getting a transport across the state, let alone across many! Good luck though! I'd really bug Husky Haven since she's one eyed. They have a soft spot for tough cases like that. _________________ -Sara |

| Thanks Sara, I'm not sure who all Nikki has talked to, but she said everyone she has talked to has turned her down. I'll keep working it, had 2 more fall through... _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. Thank you for the tips, Sara, I actually didn't try South Florida yet, but I suppose I should! I had thought they were full, but doesn't hurt to try anyway. I left a message for Husky Haven, and I'll keep on them. Honestly, almost all rescues have turned me down because she isn't coming from a shelter, so therefore isn't considered "urgent" or on the euthanasia list. Although, periodically, she does find herself on my shit list. The ironic part about the whole thing, is the owner who had her was in tears saying her husband threatened to take her to a shelter! LOL, which is how I ended up with her. So, basically, I have kept her from the trauma of a shelter and possible euthanasia, but now have lessened her chance for rescue. CRAZY! Right?!! Sara, I'm sure you understand this part...but I don't feel qualified or feel it's right for ME to adopt her out. I'm not my own rescue and I would have no legal documents to hold the new adopters accountable. Does anyone else agree?? I mean, if she doesn't go into rescue, I don't know if I could sleep at night wondering what happened to her? |

| If you can foster south Fl husky rescue can network to get her adopted. The issue is foster homes for us. But then again someone may come out of woodwork because she is special. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | Nikki has her at the vet right now, but an all breeds rescue in Panama City has stepped up to help us out.
Thanks so much for the input guys, I'm sure the input in this thread will prove valuable with all the folks on here who work with rescues. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Oh, if that's all was needed, you should have said! lol. I thought you needed a foster for her too! I could have gotten my mom to help out with her all breed rescue and let you use all the paperwork. Hope this Panama one works out, if not let me know. My mom can put dogs on petfinder for you if this rescue can't for some reason. BTW, my mom takes in rescues all the time who never were at shelters and were owner give ups. Sad that other rescues won't. They all need saving! _________________ -Sara |
