Meet Rosie the 2 year old Female Husky my family just adopter from PAWS. She was a runaway from her previous home and when we finally found her to adopt the “owners” of her tried to get her back from PAWS. When PAWS asked what proof they had that she was theirs, they had nothing, no medical records, no chip, no tags. Then when they gave the foundation their address PAWS found out that they lived on a very busy street without a fenced yard! Personally if they had ANY kind of papers on her I would have gladly let her go home but PAWS and my family thought it would be best for Rosie to live with us in a more secure quiet area. She weighs 55lbs and we are feeding her Purina One Healthy Weight 1-2 cups a day. (Because she eats sparatically and in small amounts so over the course of the day she might get through a cup of a half of food). She’s super smart and just needs some refining of basic training like look at me and stay. We love her and I think she is going to be an amazing part of our family. I am not sure why but she hasn’t barked once since we got her, about 7 days ago. Is that a good thing? Maybe she’s just not the vocal type.

Huskies, in general, do not bark. They do, however, like to talk - some more than others :p It may take here time to find her voice as she gets to know you.

One of ours barks quite a bit. The other doesn't bark too much.

My boy is in the middle. He's not much of a barker but if you're scolding him, he argues back haha

Avalanche - Alaskan Husky - barks when someone unknown pulls into the driveway or if there are strange canids (dog/coyote) in the area.
Sky - Siberian Husky - will whine when she wants in or out - otherwise silent.
Sasha - Siberian Husky - Squeals (there's no other way to describe the sound!) when it's past chow time; will whine when the water bowl is empty; grumbles loudly! when she wants in or out! Sasha will bark on command, especially if there's food involved. Obviously my most vocal.

The first time I heard Avalanche bark, I had to see what the noise was since he hadn't barked at all. Most of my crew are pretty quiet ... Sasha ...???

Yep they are smart. Maybe not so much in a formal obedience-trained way but in a way like they really understand/know "what's going on" and figure out what you want (and, what they want!).

Mine will also rarely bark. Weeks can go by without a bark. Strange people (especially men) coming to the door get barked or even growled at loudly. But if you have been to our house before even once (client, parent picking up my kid's friend, etc) then you will not get barked at. I don't know how he remembers!

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and great information. Last night she was lying on her bed and it sounded as if she was having bad dreams, every breath became a whimper. I got out of bed and slowly started to pet her which startled her awake and then after a few minutes of gentle petting She settled back asleep. Did I do the right thing waking her up? She didn’t growl per say but did give a very dissatisfied “why did you wake me” grunt but that didn’t last long. I’ve been sick the past couple days so aside from her usual walks she has just been bored around the house. What kinds of games do your huskies like to play? I have tried tug of war with her and tossing a ball but she loses interest after the first try.

Huskies, almost without exception will respond to a tossed ball with "You threw it, you want it, you go get it!" There are some exceptions but of my three - nope!

As far as waking her up when she's being noisy, I wouldn't. Dogs dream just like people do - she may have been inches away from that rabbit when you woke her, hence the "Why did you wake me?"
