I just brought home an 8 week old male puppy on Sunday. We have some kibble from his breeder to transition the food. He started on Purina Puppy Chow and we're trying to transition him to a higher quality, grain free food (Wholehearted from Petco). We've been doing the 3/4 and 1/4 mix with old and new food. Since we've gotten him he's eaten maybe half a cup total (it's been two days now). I know there's a period of transition with new animals and new owners but I'm worried he's not eating enough to keep up with his puppy growth and energy. How long can I expect this transition to take? Is the new food what's turning him off? Should I stick to just feeding him the lower quality food from the breeder until he's a little more acclimated to us?
He also doesn't like any of the treats we've bought. We've tried peanut butter and apple treats, chicken jerky treats, and bacon training treats. He'll eat it the first couple times we give it to him and then after that he has no interest in eating them again. We're trying elk tonight (my husband hunts and we have it on hand) but we're just worried about how successful we can be at training if there's no food reward.
On a side note, I do know it takes a bit for new animals to get warmed up since I went through it with both my cats but they only took one night until they were voracious little eaters.
We're up for any ideas to help encourage eating or any food brands others have found success with. We want our little guy to be as healthy as possible.
