training - Crate Training! Help! Losing Sleep! Empty
PostSubject: Crate Training! Help! Losing Sleep!   training - Crate Training! Help! Losing Sleep! EmptyTue Aug 04, 2015 9:24 am

So we have an almost 4 month old female Husky. We got her at 8 weeks old. She's doing overall pretty well, still having some trouble with potty training - at least 1 accident in the house a day but we're working on that.
However the biggest problem is when we put her in the crate at night...when we first put her in she's fine and will be quiet and sleep but around 1-2am she'll be crying to go out (which is a new thing bc she would normally sleep until about 4am). So we let her out take her potty and put her back in. She'll then only stay quiet for about an hour and then wake up again howling/crying. We know she can hold her bladder now because we leave her home in the crate while we're at work for 5-6 hours during the day. We've tried playing/going on walks before bed to tire her out, we also have a 5 year old shepherd mix and they play until bed time too. We've also tried the whole "let her cry it out" thing and it literally goes on for hours....What else can we do?!?
We're at the point now where we may just lock her in our bedroom with us to see if she just hates being in the crate. Any advice from fellow Husky owners?
Much appreciated! Sleep

That would be terrible! I don't know if I could handle it.

Unfortunately, my only advice is to stop letting her out at night. When she whines, you let her outside. She knows that, so she will whine so you will get her out. If she whines and you do nothing, she will understand it will get her nothing at all.  Every time you let her out while she is whining, or even shortly after, will cause the whining to get worse; because, in her brain, that is her way of telling you,"Hey hooman, get me out of this box please!" Every time she does get out when she whines only affirms that. I'm not sure of another way. Someone more versed than I will more than likely chime in! Wink

My Koda was able to hold her bladder all through the night by 4 months, but she would need to go out promptly in the morning. I take her outside just seconds before bed, then we come back inside and go to sleep and she doesn't get out or up until the morning. When she was whining in the crate at night I would move the crate to another room, so negative punishment because she lost something she wanted which was to be with me. (She does sleep with me, but there were a few times I stayed somewhere she couldn't be out and about.) That might not be the "correct" way to do it, but it worked for me.

Good luck! I hope you get some sleep soon!

Thank you for the advice! It's a tough one, I hate hearing her cry but there's not much else to do. I did tell my husband not to get up and let her out but he couldn't take it anymore and did...which I agree is probably why she does it now. We'll just have to keep the TV on or get some ear plugs maybe haha

Yeah, it is super hard to just let it go on. I always felt so bad for just leaving her there to cry it out.

Maybe a blanket over the crate? That might help a little. Maybe she isn't getting enough exercise. The goal at this age is two or three 20 minute walks a day. (Five minutes for every month of age) So it could be as simple as taking her for more walks or start teaching tricks because mental stimulation is just as tiring. I know Koda sleeps while i'm at work (she is probably asleep now) so I have to take her for a walk or two before we ever get close to bed time. You can also start leaving brain toys for her to work on while you are gone to keep her from sleeping. I will water down peanut butter, fill her kong with it, and freeze it over night so she will have something to do, a job, for the day.

Leo was not sleeping though the night until he was 5 months old, he always needed to pee around 2am  Laughing.
but some dogs just don't like to be crated, may chihuahua is the same way hates the crate and will scream bloody murder until his out and it would go one for hours (my brother didn't want him loose), but now that we have moved; he is now loose in the down stairs and he can be left alone without a sound.
if shes not getting into things you could try leaving the create open and her loose in the room, and see how it goes. i know crating is essential but in some cases it might be best not to create.
ultimately its up to you and what you feel comfortable with.

They like to be with their pack. My suggestion is, if the crate can fit in your bedroom, and puppy knows you are asleep, chances are puppy will sleep. Being close to you I think, imho, may settle your pup. I also like the suggestion Tyler gave you, perhaps a sheet or blanket at bedtime will help. Ronin, I'm not sure I would trust a young pup, who may not be fully potty trained to roam all night, again though, mho.

If you let her out, make sure she has been quiet for a period of time before you open the crate. Then at least you will get away from reinforcing the whining. Ours was generally able to hold it all night most of the time at 4-5 months, but still, just to be safe if she is needing to go do her business at night, you might not want to completely ignore her as she truly might be whining because she is going to have an accident. That will make training a lot harder, if she starts soiling her crate consistently.

Generally, our first few months were spent with earplugs and pillows over our heads, and multiple fans on, and a noise machine, and our dog was DOWNSTAIRS while we were upstairs - so I can empathize. If you remain consistent it DOES get better, just do NOT vary how you respond or the whining will get reinforced and become harder to stop.
