Hey guys i am planning to get a husky but i am not sure....
I know all about husky's but i want some owner's advice
You know husky's need daily exercise...5 miles is fine for a year old husky?
I read somewhere that when your husky becames 4-6 years old he need to run for 10-15 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that true? How is someone supposed to run for 10 miles every day with a dog?.......I think this is impossible...
If i dont run my husky 10 miles per day when he gets older he'll be a sad husky or what?
Please help...If i get a dog i want it to be happy!

ok, first, I think you need to do way more research, there are a lot of good threads here.

Your dog will adapt to your lifestyle but you will need to be very active with it. Ours walk about 30-40 minutes in the morning and another 30 at night. The younger more active one walks all of this with a weighted backpack on. Puppys generally should walk 5 minutes for every month they age, which of course can be more than once per day.

You don't necessarily have to run with them, but they need to be active or they will become destructive. I suggest you really evaluate how much exercise you can offer your dog before jumping in. A lot of our members hike with their dogs on weekends and its great for them.

Please research more on the breed in terms of temperament, activity level and needs before you go on to find a breeder. Also please please please research breeders or consider adopting from a shelter. Stay away from craigslist "breeders"

Hope this helped.

Technically that's not impossible,  but it is completely unnecessary.  Mental stimulation like training and structured engaged walking go a very long way.

Maybe a dog who is tied up outside all day or improperly crated for 10 hours might need that,  but in my book that is mental and emotional abuse so much as it is physical neglect.

There's also something to be said for conditioning dogs, there has to be. More running and physical work will in turn require more as the default rises for those dogs.

People dramatize rules of thumb all the time.  Read up on here and ask questions.  We have lots of realistic experiences on here.

Look into skijoring, bikejoring, carting, dog scootering, and all of the other urban mushing dog-powered sports, to include dog sledding of course! I came to a point with my dogs that 2-3 hour daily walks were not enough exercise, and they started running faster than I could keep up, so that's when I researched and discovered those above-mentioned methods of exercising. I'm in the process of getting my first Diggler dog scooter, and in the meantime we go for 5 to 11-mile bikejoring rides 6 days a week. I also sometimes attach a bike canopy trailer loaded with dumbbells to help add weight, and they (all 4 dogs) pull a total of 350 lbs for about 6 miles. I usually don't even have to pedal unless there are super strong winds or we go up hills. They pull me all the way out and back at whatever speeds they can, so they get to run and pull and learn sled dog commands for mental training/exercise. It takes us about 40-60 minutes to do our average 6-miler, which is a lot better on my busy schedule than those 2-3 hour walks that didn't even wear them down. Hope that helps.

Make sure you learn about the proper age to do such activities with your dog, and build them up over time. The pup's growth plates need to fuse/seal before running them any distance.

PostSubject: Re: I have some questions about walking a husky!!   I have some questions about walking a husky!! EmptyFri Jan 16, 2015 4:33 am

Something happened at the dog bath house we took Link to the other day that reminded me of this thread and the basic question of needing to walk a dog.

My partner, Link, and myself were sitting on the bench patiently waiting our turn.    Link was sitting against my partner's leg, calmly waiting and politely curious about the dogs and people coming and going.  He politely sniffed the dogs and was having a good time, working for us and engaged.

There were two customers ahead of us, both to our left.   On the far left was a lady and her whippet.  I could tell the whippet was a bit nervous and insecure, and he was clung to his human's leg, behind her and under the bench, and worried.  The whippet was quiet and calm, despite the nervousness.   Really, he just had that classic sight hound skittishness, perhaps.  But the place was busy so there were dogs and humans everywhere.   The lady just sat quietly and waited.

Between us was a couple, a black doodle, and about 4 toys for the one doodle.  I could overhear everything they were saying and the doodle kept repeatedly bumping into me, into Link, and just being an absolute brat.

The two humans were playing a game of 2 steps forward, and 2 steps back in their interactions with their dog. They'd rile him up with the toys, high pitched excited voices, and physical touches with hands.  The doodle--as seems so common with them--was basically doing back flips, barking, crying, licking, circles, play bows, more back flips, and yet, more back flips, tug of war, squeaky ball, more tug, rope toy, more tug, and more back flips.   It was just a constant input of energy to this doodle by the humans.  Constant. Then they'd say Sit and Calm Down and Please Stop and they would get frustrated right after their excitement.  Give, take, give, take.

I think the whippet lady and us were sending some very intense non-verbal communication, because after a while, they began back pedaling a bit and seeming embarrassed by their doodle.  The next time the dog bumped my leg, I shot the woman a look, and she emphatically apologized and told me "I have no idea why he behaves this way, I'm so sorry."

I felt like I was in a play and I wanted to excitedly raise my hand to say "pick me, I know, pick me.  I know why your dog is a crazed maniac!!!!"

I bit my tongue instead, but I really don't know why.

The situation reminded me of a concept of Kevin Behan in his book Your Dog is Your Mirror.  He talks about how dogs must release energy as output, and for a dog this manifests itself as physical energy.  Well, we are largely responsible for the energy input into our dogs: could be emotional, mental, or physical.  What goes in, must come out.     This does not account for basic physical exercise that a dog needs, just excessive energy.

To me it seems like generally speaking, a Husky needs more exercise than a doodle.  But, the amount of walking that this particular doodle would need to burn that stuff out an reset his default level far exceeds my dog's standard daily 3-4 mile walk.  I think it is fair to say that if we rile our dogs up all the time, shower them with excitement all the time, and allow them to solely operate on the highest gear possible, then they will in turn require more exercise from us---which of course, too often, does not happen.    Too much input, not enough output.

The doodle was called next, and of course, he drug his human along on leash like a rag doll.  Then, the calm Husky and the nervous whippet came together, sniffed, and the whippet calmed down and laid right next to the Husky.   They sorta became one.  It was adorable.

Anyway, just food for thought with a dog's exercise needs.
