PostSubject: Is my husky puppy overweight?   Is my husky puppy overweight? EmptyMon Dec 23, 2013 3:00 pm

I have a 9 month old husky puppy who I am afraid is becoming overweight. We had been feeding her three cups a day of merrick grain feed dog food and have recently cut her back to two cups a day. She is 46 pound, which I know is a "normal" weight, but we can't feel her ribs anymore. She gets a lot of exercise in the dog park and playing with our 6 month old lab puppy. We don't run with her because I heard it is bad before a puppy is a year old, but we do bring her for walks and give her loads of free play time! Is she overweight or is it just a puppy thing? The added weight is fairly recent.

I know that it's hard to judge a weight just with age alone. If you could take a picture of her back looking down while she is standing and a side picture it would be easier see what's going on with her weight.

It may be some puppy weight. 46 pounds for 9 months is around what Juneau weighed. She was 52 lbs at 1 year, with 21 inches at the shoulders. I've been exercising her more and she seems to have lost a little bit. I feed her 2 - 2 1/2 cups a day, depending on exercise and activity level.

If she has big stools, then you're wasting food. Juneau has smallish sized stools. I know it's hard to gauge sizes lol.

Huskies are usually done with growing around 12 months, but tend to fill out until 18 months. But you should definitely be able to feel the ribs.

If you upload some pics it would help too.

She is still growing and they will often have a little plump before a growth spurt.  It can be quite noticeable from one day to the next.

If you can feel the ribs and she has a distinct waist that curves inward and a tummy tuck then she should be okay.  I noticed with my puppy as he grew that his growth...chunk deposits...were near the should and front of the rib cage.  And then he grows and he looks slim again.

How long has she been eating 2 cups a day? She does look a bit chunky, but if you just recently cut her food back you may not be able to see a difference yet. Also it could be her age, in combination with the season. My pup is a week shy of 10 months and he looks kinda chunky at the moment as well, but with him, I've noticed he's chucks up and then grows taller or longer, so I'm not worried about it.

She has been on 2 cups a day for about 3 weeks now and she has not lost any weight. I am scared to feed her less because she is still a growing puppy, but I also would not like her to have other problems in the future tied with obesity.

2 cups a day for a routinely exercised young Husky should in time sort itself out to being just fine.
