HELP- Skunked & vomiting! Empty
PostSubject: HELP- Skunked & vomiting!   HELP- Skunked & vomiting! EmptyTue Oct 08, 2013 7:58 pm

I don't really know for sure if this is in the right place, but here it goes. Rig got skunked at 4 am Sunday morning. Woke me up from a dead sleep and OF COURSE we were out of hydrogen peroxide.. so off to the store I went. When I got home I spent an hour and a half giving him 3 baths in the hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and baking soda. Then I did a bath in just dish soap and mouth wash. We placed vinegar through out the house because we read that it soaks up the skunk smell (and it worked.) So now the house smells fine, and the dog doesn't smell.. as bad. It's mostly just his face still.
But here's the issue. He didn't eat all day Sunday and threw up mid day- which I chalked up to not eating since Saturday night and the traumatic experience of being skunked. He pretty much just laid around all day Sunday, so I figured he really didn't feel good.
Yesterday he wouldn't eat breakfast either, so I figured he still wasn't feeling well and he would eat dinner. When I got home he seemed better, playing with the other dogs- we went for a short walk, etc. So I offered him a cup of food mixed with some rinsed hamburger meat. He ate between 530-6pm and then proceeded to vomit at 11:30 last night.
He's been acting normal today- Went for a walk, playing with the other dogs, etc. Just can't really seem to keep his food down. This morning he vomited about 45 minutes after breakfast- and he was given a completely bland diet. Has anyone else's dog had such a severe reaction to being sprayed? I asked the vet yesterday and she said it's very uncommon, but try a bland diet and see how he does.. today's his first day on a completely bland diet so we'll see.. I'm just worried Sad If he's not better tomorrow, aka continues to vomit I'm going to bring him in- I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this type of experience.. this is our first "skunking" and hopefully our last! I fed him tonight at about 6 and no vomit yet.. but after last night we might not be out of the woods just yet, poor boy Sad

Could he maybe have swallowed some of the skunk oils and that's why he's vomiting? I don't have any other ideas, sorry. I hope he feels better soon! Keep us posted.

For the skunk smell (we got skunked in May) our vet gave us her best trick for the smell. Take any tube of toothepaste, rub it into the area, really rub it in deep, then let it sit until it dries. Then back in the tub.

I would try some pepto. You can use a half tablet for up to 40 lbs. I've used it for my pup when he had diarrhea with no harm (actually gave him a full tablet a couple times). Give him the pepto about 15-30 min before you feed him. It should help to settle his stomach before eating and hopefully help him keep it down. I would also try just giving him a very small amount of food and then a little more and hour later. If I fasted my pup (used to have a big problem with diarrhea) and then gave him a full meal, it was a recipe for disaster. :)Good luck, I hope he's able to eat today!

So he threw up yesterday morning, but did manage to keep his dinner and this mornings breakfast down. I just fed him dinner- chicken and rice with just a handful of dog food in it and he threw some of it back up-into his dish after it had been emptied... and then proceeded to eat it again, Gross! He does seem to be getting better but I don't know what's going on. I was chalking it up to the skunk but no I have no idea! Smile Thank you all for your suggestions, advice and experiences!

Hope your Rig would get better and the smell would gone soon. Just the other day, our neighbor's boxer got slight skunk spray too on the chest. They did most of smell removal tips and seemed satisfied for her mother doesn't smell much, but when he was at the park today, the owner said some people still smell him, in the house they might immune with the smell. Now he needs more bathing for few days.
